How often do you use Sport Chrono? A "Must Have" Option?

I'd love to have the extra engine throttle maps, but the stopwatch and more laid-back PSM I have no use for.

Just wanted to ask you guys who have the option and use the car only for street driving: what do you think of it after a few months of ownership?

I like the idea of getting a "loaded" car and can fully understand getting stuff anyway even though you don't use very much at all.

BUT on the other hand I can't stand clutter so I wonder if the stopwatch on the dash will bother me over the long term especially if I never use it.

    My question:

Do you USE the sport buton for it's throttle changes very much on a daily or weekly basis?

IOW, is it a "must get" option and, if so, why would you say it qualifies as a must get option?

Oh, I have the lesser BMW version in my M3 (throttle map change only) and I never use it except when somebody asks me what the button is for.

Re: How often do you use Sport Chrono? A "Must Have" Option?

    Max,
Everytime I drive the car, I switch on the "Sport" button. Recently, I've been also pressing the "PASM" button afterwards because I don't get to drive on nice roads and with "Sport" only, you really feel the bumps. If someone could tell me how I can have "Sport" on by default without the stiff suspension, I would leave my car like that all the time.

Honestly, I don't notice the stopwatch at all. Why? Because I think there is too much other stuff to look at on the dashboard

Re: How often do you use Sport Chrono? A "Must Have" Option?

I agree. The stop watch never bothered me and i bearly notice it.

But the csp is a must.first thing i do when i start the car is press that magic sport botton.

Re: How often do you use Sport Chrono? A "Must Have" Option?

Interesting comment guys. I still can't make my mind up whether or not to have sport chrono on my Boxster. I did try a 997 (not S)with it but it was only a short drive and in the time I had with it I didn't feel much benefit. The one and only option I can't decide on!

Re: How often do you use Sport Chrono? A "Must Have" Option?

If this option was say Pounds2000 plus i could understand peoples reservations, but for Pounds500 i think if it does half of what is supposed to do then its worth the money, especially on a car that costs Pounds70000.Also i think you will find that people will want it when they are buying a used 997s

Re: How often do you use Sport Chrono? A "Must Have" Option?

I agree it's a must have. I wasn't thrilled by the stopwatch at first, but 700 miles in I don't even notice it. I always press the sport button.

Re: How often do you use Sport Chrono? A "Must Have" Option?

I only drive with Sport but find I need to turn off PASM for a smoother ride. Is there any way to have Sport always on? The sport chrono was really helpful when I tried to seriously reduce my time for a pizza run

Re: How often do you use Sport Chrono? A "Must Have" Option?

It's a must-have option that I use whenever my car isn't in the shop.

Re: How often do you use Sport Chrono? A "Must Have" Option?

The enhanced throttle response is one thing but the changed and less intrusive ESP mapping is heaven on earth.
Of course only if you're more interested in actually driving this car and not bragging about missing spare wheels, wheel designs, interior options and other stuff.

And right now, with outside temperatures in the 2-8* C range, I'm pretty happy there is actually a button to turn chrono sport on and off. You don't want to drive with chrono sport in winter time, believe me.

BTW: the tires are better than I thought in low temperatures, it seems that they needed to get rid of a little bit of rubber to get maximum "stickness". But ride comfort is pretty bad now (if you really care about it), the tires become pretty stiff at around 2-5*C and below 2* C, the tire is actually a risk, especially in fast driven twists and turns because the grip is reduced substantially.
Tire noise also is louder at low temperatures but I think this is pretty normal. Surprisingly, the gearbox seems to work better at low temperatures, really weird.
Also the steering reacts a little bit more sensitive to bad streets due to the increased stiffness of the tires, especially the front ones which don't build up too much heat anyway during driving.
The new generation PCCB brake is just great, no squeaking at low temperatures and the brake feel is unchanged. The tires still show a pretty good braking performance but it isn't the same as with higher outside temperatures.
Overall, I'm pleased with the 997 on cold days but if it snows or rains, you definetely need a good set of winter tires. Otherwise it is no fun.

I took your advice and am defaulting to Sport but normal PASM (off). The throttle response is fantastically improved. And that makes all the difference.

As observed by others, the stopwatch is quite silly looking and unnecessary, especially since the full functionality is replicated on the screen, but it is currently the only way to get the Sport settings and I assume Porsche did it this way because they didn't think people would pay $900+ just for a firmware mod.
