Comparing $200K commuter cars (w/hefty associated depreciation) vs sub-$100K commuter cars...very different buyer bases.....ole apples vs oranges comparos 
Interesting why Bimmer hasn't successfully marketed $100K+ cars (aside from Z8 briefly in Bubble era).....draw your own conclusions....

You can't compare the new BMW M5 to the CL/SL/S65 AMG.
The BMW M5 has a much sportier setup for a limousine and if you want to compare it, compare it maybe to the S65 but it still would be an apples vs. oranges comparison because the S65 is a more comfort oriented high power limousine, even if I have to agree that it is fascinating to have that much power in a limousine.
The new BMW M5 probably wants to serve two worlds, the comfort world and the sports car world. I owned a E55 AMG for 8 months because I thought both worlds can be combined in one single car. No chance, so I sold it.
I really depends on what you want.
In the US, I would probably drive a S65 instead of a M5.
In Europe, the M5 would probably be more fun.
I tell you when I'm getting a little bit older, right now I already had my share of limousine driving.
The best solution is still two cars: one family car which I prefer to be powerful too (in my case: a Cayenne Turbo) and one little sports car for me for those special moments when I find the time to be alone for an hour or two (in my case: the 997 Carrera S).

The M5 has the advantage of two more gears, a very fast SMG system opposed to an automatic and lower weight and drag.
Actually I'd suspect it still has a slight advantage over the S65 since below 60 mph traction is more of an issue than anything else, beyond that the M5's better aerodynamics should make him keep up.
In my eyes both engines are stressed very high and I'd be curious to know how long both would last in spirited driving.
The fact that it can even turn is a slight advantage for the M5...

The magazine was Sport Auto, and Sport Auto's ring lap time of the SL55AMG was 8:12 (2002), only one second faster than the "sedan" with 5 seats and a big trunk. But IMO I don't think the 2+2 Coupe SL should be compared to the M5 sedan anyway, out of the three you'd have to compare the S65, and even so the E65 is the actual equivalent.

with 600 hp they should or it would be embarassing.. but the difference isnt big. Besides, you get a M5 for half the price and for the price of a SL65 I rather buy a ferrari or a lamborghini.
And I know mercedesfans want to discuss Nurnburing but dont forget, M5 is faster around Hockenheim. And M6 will destroy both Sl55 and M5 around Nurnburgring and Hockenheim.
