Buying A Used Cayenne - What Should I Be Aware Of?

Hey troops! My friend is in the market for a used Cayenne. He has his sights set on MY 05 - 08, a Turbo or S model and wants to seal the deal in the next few weeks. I rolled my eyes at him given where gas prices are going; we jumped from $3.59 to $4.29/gallon in the last 3 weeks when North Africa decided to have a new revolution every few days. Is there anything particularly quirky, known defects and issues, recalls, etc he should be looking for, or any particular year he should avoid as much as possible? Sidenote: I'm also strongly encouraging him to look at the V10 Touareg. If anyone knows anything about this model with respect to the same items, I would appreciate any guidance. Thx.

I have been happy with my 2004 Cayenne S, which now has 155k miles on it. I had to replace a transfer case at 120k but otherwise no significant repair history. The motor still has virtually no oil consumption. I have heard that the Turbo does use some oil and that concerns some people, but I don't know that it affects longevity. I would suggest your friend check the repair history for whatever vehicle he is looking at. If the Cayenne has had all scheduled, and unscheduled, maintenance done at a Porsche dealership, and they have the records to prove that, it's probably a safe bet. I don't know much about the Touareg but I have heard that VW has a poor reputation for their service department, so I'm not certain about the value of service records for that vehicle. It's been many, many years since I owned a VW, but that was my experience with them also: worst service department imaginable. I was much better off with third party repair shops.

Buy the latest and fastest model possible--no joke. I live in your region, so your friend can send me a private message if he would like. I have a late model Cayenne and can perhaps help him decide dealers, models, etc.

Like Wonderbar said, I wouldn't go for the last generation for various reasons.

Looking at the current fuel prices, I would probably look more into a X5/X6 35d/40d in the US but on the other hand, I just fueled up my X5 M at 1.74 EUR a liter, meaning around 9.21 USD a gallon, so I really don't get the problem with fuel prices in the US. Smiley

...nothing. 08s are pretty stable.

Just very minor areas to pay attention to: factory supplies faulty water and hipressure fuel pumps. That's about it.

PS. The real reason for rising gas prices is not the N.African revolutions. This is just an excuse for general public created by traders-speculators for the sole purpose to artificially move/inflate gas price. If price is stable, they are NOT making any money. They ONLY make money, when price swings...

Yes, current gas/oil prices are just the result of speculation, nothing else.

There is a lot of speculation going on right now, apparently many of the involved parties didn't learn from the past and apparently many governments don't seem to want to get involved in putting political pressure on a free market economy. Truth is, this can go pretty bad if the oil prices rise further.
