    991 Sport PASM (SPASM)

I realise there are far too few owners of 991's yet to really answer this question properly but it occurs to me that SPASM might go some way towards resolving the lack of feedback or connection with the road which the new 991 has been critisised over in some reviews - albeit that the reviews have focused on the new steering as being to blame for this.

I have heard that aside from the cosmetic improvements from the lower stand the firmer ride and the bigger front lip that SPASM is supposed to feel somewhere between the normal and firm settings on a PASM equipped car. Surely this will mean an improvement in feedback and connection to the road? SPASM on the new 991 seems really good value for a performance improving option as it is only £558 as compared to the £768 for SPASM & LSD on the 997 - I suspect because the LSD is now standard on 991 C2S as part of Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+).

When I enquired at my local OPC a couple of weeks back I was told that they thought that SPASM would be bad for resale as most customers didnt want it! This seems to be mirrored in postings on other Porsche forums I have seen where other UK owners & enthusiasts post, yet SPASM seems to be really popular amongst US 991 owners. I find the UK dealers influencing spec like this quite frustrating as it becomes a bit of a self fullfilling propehcy if customers are put off in this way when ordering. Aside from the dealers influence I am struggling to see why the sports suspension option would be unpopular on what is a sports car first and foremost? yesAlthough it was still a rare choice, those 997 owners who purchased the -20mm suspension all seemed to be very happy with it, so I am really unclear how the dealers have formed this opinion.

What are peoples thoughts on SPASM on the 991 - indeed has anybody actually driven a 991 with SPASM back to back with one fitted with PASM and if so did it add to the feel and feedback or simply make for a more harsh ride?

    Re: 991 Sport PASM (SPASM)

Your UK dealer could be right, in Germany customers prefer the regular PASM because of ride comfort. I even had problems convincing my dealer to let me order my 997 Carrera GTS Cab with the sport shells and PCCB, he was pretty much concerned that when I return the car to him (lease), it would be difficult to find customers for such a "sporty" setup. Even worse with the sport chassis on the Coupe he said. Personally, I don't get it but judging by the age of those who joined us on our latest group ride, it may be understandable. angry 55 and over...

Have you tried talking to one of the bigger dealers?  They are often more relaxed about the less popular choices hitting residuals becasue they have a much bigger target audience with more diverse needs.

Reading actually had a 997 GTS demonstrator with SPASM (it was great) so they might have a 991...?

there was a 991 with Sports PASM in Reading about 4 weeks ago.

    Re: 991 Sport PASM (SPASM)

Hmmm, sounds like Reading is a somewhat more progressive dealer than my local one.  Unfortunatly my dealer is the only one for some miles but as a consequence is actually one of the largest in the country (in terms of sales).  Im a bit stuck as the next two nearest are also owned by the same group so I suspect they would have the same attitude to SPASM.

Does anybody in Reading want to volunteer to take that car for a test drive then and report back!  indecision

    Re: 991 Sport PASM (SPASM)

I have been researching this because I have a 991S Cab and I'm unhappy with the ride height and overall feel of the car.  I found an article that said in the 997 the only difference was the springs.  10mm shorter and about 10% stiffer than stock.  The dampers, suspension bushings, and roll bar was the same.  Does anyone know if the 991 is also just springs?  If so I'll try it and report back...

    Thanks

Sadly that's my age group RC Smiley - maybe this is why SWMBO and myself couldn't get on with the firm ride of the non-PASM Cayman. And believe me the German roads are in a totally different league to the increasingly rutted, pot holed and ill maintained UK roads Smiley

Maybe it's time for us to think about buying a Volvo.....we quite like the look of the new V40..Smiley

    Re: 991 Sport PASM (SPASM)

Sport PASM is perfect, it does wonders for the look, it's quite comfortable and ramps are no problem at all.

And I don't think that you'll get resale problems, especially because it's kind of rare -- and just imagine a potential buyer digging around a used car dealer's lot and then seeing a 991 which looks lower (and better, IMHO) than the 10 991's next to him...

    Re: 991 Sport PASM (SPASM)

My 991 has SPASM as did my 997.2, I love it.  Unfortunately I can't tell you what a 991 that doesn't have it feels like so can't compare.  However, in normal mode the ride is much, much better than my 997.2 was in normal mode.  The ride in normal mode of my 991 is much better than the 997.1's I've driven as a further example.  The compliance of the suspension without harming the ride quality is what impresses me the most.

I rarely used sport mode in my 997.2, but find myself using it pretty often in the 991.  The ride is firm but it's not objectionable (course I'm in my 30's...) and the car's handling is absolutely superb.   I wouldn't buy a 991 without SPASM.

After living with the 991 for awhile, I'd never go back to 997.2, the steering was a concern initially, but is a non-issue for me.   Now purists may prefer the model my car's behind in the pics below for steering feel.  Two dirty black 911's of different eras.
