CLS is about Mercedes going after baby boomers...and also after BMW recent 7 and 5 series survivors... 
There are lot of people looking for sport sedans - E55 is an extreme version of E class which not so flashy to say at least, CLS is the opposite.
Actually CLS represents everything Merc didnt do in the last 10 years - design wise of course.
From my perspective there is no better car in this category than MaserQ. I wish I could have it

What ever happened to the 7 speed box that was ideally suited to the torque potential of the AMG engines? In the 500s the new box gets great write ups, why would MB hold back, the CLS would be the ideal vehicle in which move the game forward, or do they have something even madder than the 65 series in reserve, possibly as a tool to upstage the new M5?

I think its because the 7 speed box can't handle more than 600Nm of torque.....which explains why the next-gen NA engines from MB would have roughly 600Nm
