Retrofitting button equipped PDK cars with the paddles

Has Porsche come out of the closet on this one yet? Can the new paddle equipped PDK steering wheel first seen in the 997.2 Turbo be retrofitted to cars with the buttons on their steering wheels? Can this be done officially (i.e. through a Porsche dealer)?

I was told by my dealer that the paddle shift wheel was going to be available as a dealer retrofit kit sometime during the first quarter of 2010.

Re: Retrofitting button equipped PDK cars with the paddles

Exactly..it  will be possible very soon ( if not already ) It cost around 950 EURO

Thanks for the info guys. Any PDK owners out there planning to do the retrofit?

Re: Retrofitting button equipped PDK cars with the paddles

There has been a thread about this question a few weeks back.

There was not much  enthusiasm for a change... one mentioned he might change because he does not like the feel of the plastic on the puddles.

I will not . I got used to the puddles and I tried the paddles on the turbo and , eventhaugh they are better then the buttons, they are not ideal to my taste ( should not move with the steering wheel ) , so I will keep my puddle.

Re: Retrofitting button equipped PDK cars with the paddles

I was told by Dealer that availability will be as from week 06/2010 for retrofit.

Porsche asked dealer to order already the number they expect to sell.

I asked them to reserve provisionally 1 piece for me. What I liked when trying the paddle wheel on a Turbo is that it is thinner especially at the 9 o clock and 3 o clock positions and it fell better in my hand. The buttons vs. paddles is not a big issue for me personally but I found the button wheel a bit thicker than I would have liked.

If I do the switch I will lose the multifunction feature which is helpful as I do many calls whilst in the car

I totally agree with that part. I did also find my steering wheel too thick  at 9 and 3. It actually gets thicker at these two places only. .... that would be one more argument to change....

That was me!  But now I am thinking more seriously about changing to paddles, since when I took the car for the first time on the track (the Porsche Club UAE gave us the privilege to have a track day on the Yas Marina circuit Smiley Smiley) I found that at more than one instance I inadvertently pressed the button shifting up whilst taking a corner, thus making them quite frustrating.

I'll speak to the OPC sales guy tomorrow and see what he says about availability...

Another reason may be looks. I think the whole paddle wheel looks much better than the puddle version. Smiley

That has happen to me too Smiley

But the  new paddles  are very close to the steering wheel. When I test drove the turbo I accidently also hit he paddles Smiley

    Porsche does that on purpose:

with the puddles you can hit them accidently very easy, so you don't have to rethink, when you change to paddles. Smiley

Thanks, Gnil, very interesting information - will certainly keep this in mind

I spoke to my OPC today and they said that the new Turbo will be launched in this market by the end of the month, and the test car will be available only in Feb.  Only after that will they have more information about the retro-fit option for us.  So I think it's going to be a long-ish wait for us in this market..

I'll take the opportunity and test drive the new Turbo, and in the bargain check out whether I want to change my steering wheel.  (Hope I don't want to change my car after the test drive!!)
