huangester:
I wonder if the feeling of driving a 911 is now different after you have taste of supercar series. I think for me, supercar series are a different level than sport series of 911. the driving dynamic and feeling of driving the car are in completely different zone.... regardless of the figures. just not the same
It is completely different in may ways.
1. Sound: There is nothing like the V10 sound (I know how this sounds but it is unbelievable and keep in mind that my car is stock!). From inside the car, the V10 sounds only half as loud as from the outside, which is quite weird, even with the windows completely open. Just yesterday I was out for a drive with my daughter and I accelerated from standstill to 4000 rpm in first and second gear. What I didn't know: My wife and my son were on their bicycles near by. When I returned home, my wife was mad as hell. She told me that the car was so loud that probably the whole town heard me and I should never do that again. I asked my son and he confirmed. Not that I really hate this.
2. Steering: The dynamic steering on the new R8 is like a power steering supported go-kart. Very short steering way but razor sharp and precise. Whenever I switch to my 991 GTS or Mini JCW, I get the feeling that something is wrong. Just yesterday, after my drive, I switched to the 991 GTS and almost hit another car parked on the right because I didn't steer in enough to take the left turn. Enormous difference between the R8 steering and 911 steering but maybe not to everyone's taste. On the Autobahn or in fast curves, the steering stays razor sharp but it doesn't get nervous at all, very good setup. Also, it depends on the mode you choose, the steering changes with the driving mode.
3. Looks: Well, of course my 991 GTS (Cab, black, black wheels, red stitching with GTS lettering, Alcantara, nice PSE sound) always attracts attention but when I drive my R8, people take out their smartphones and take photos, some are even following in their cars or on their bikes and are shooting videos! Not sure I always like it, some are following and keeping a very short distance but the car certainly attracts more attention than a 911, especially since you see 911 on every corner here in Germany.
Overall, it is a completely different experience but I wish I would be able to drive such a car in a different (social) environment or bigger city. In my region, even an Audi R8 is borderline "acceptable" and I wasn't really aware of that. Another problem is that very old R8 (first generation), especially the V8 models, are available for "little" money over here and those driving them are not exactly the kind of customers the brand needs (look at some of the photos here and you'll understand) to keep the brand value up.
