Next thing you know, they will be banning porn because it might be making men behave in a sexual way .

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

So all those middle aged women driving SUVs that terrorize the roads on their cell phones are playing racing games???

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

G'damn political correctness gone wrong! What is the world coming to?

Mankind thrives on stupidity. All you can hope for is to contain it. Of course a soccer mom with a heavy SUV is safer than a successful adult male with impressive driving skill and good judgement driving a Porsche.

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

Next thing will be a study about how excessive posting on Rennteam influences the driving habits

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

I think reckless driving depends mostly on the type of person the driver is, i.e., punk kid asking for trouble.

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

Next thing you know, they'll claim the 35% of drivers between 18-35 years old who admitted they have read their Blackberries AND typed return text messages WHILE DRIVING are hazardous to pedestrians, cyclists or other drivers . Don't we all drive down the road at 10-30 minute stretches with the equivalent of our eyes closed 8 out of every 10 seconds ?

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

Oh come on...the "findings" this study makes are bullsh1t!

The initial study is a correlational-design so no actual causality can be defined either way...

Hence..it is just as likely that people who like to drive fast...ALSO like to play video games...opposed with; video games MAKE people drive fast..

Infact, I would say that the former explaination is vastly more likely...in my experiences as a psychologist; personality consistent behaviour is much more prevalent than neuropsychological change brought about by experience itself..

And the second section lacks SERIOUS ecological validity...a proffesional will tell you that altered-responses of this nature are highly DOMAIN-SPECIFIC...i.e. just because somebody drives recklessly in a game doesn't mean that they are going to do the same thing out on the highway...

    Anyone care to disagree?

Well this IS a German study.

I agree that no one can claim that 100% of the people who play the race video game will all be reckless drivers. However, those who have a penchant for recklessness will be embolden by the game. I do not believe anyone can deny that.

The problem is how does society identify these people.

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

Hey, I just think that the 'jump' between video games and reality is too far to constitute real science...but hey thats academia for you!

I agree. Maybe it's no coincidence that the "study" is coming from Germany. We have a hot political discussion since a couple of months about a ban of so-called "Killer Video Games" (due to a tragedy which happened at a school, where a pupil who obviously loved to play these games went Amok killing some pupils/teachers and then comitted suicide)
I'm not convinced by the theory though - I've read all the Western stuff (Karl May) as a kid but I never killed an Indian or a Cowboy

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

Yes, Porsche-Jeck, Karl May, a prolific writer of western fiction who I believe never left Germany, let alone visit the American West, his writing didn't suffer for it though! A very talented writer indeed! Last year In Landshut, I pointed his many books out to my wife and explained his significance in modern German culture.

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

What annoys me is that the children were often bullied/marginalised for some reason or another..and yet this is ignored and video-games/ popular culture are labled as the problem...I don't know what agenda some people are trying to promote really...what do they have against a very important, growing, artistic industry!?

    Re: Does this surprise anyone?

How about incorporating into the "racing games" the scenario that when you are involved in an incident that in the real world would be life threatening, the game is over. You don't get to play any more. Wouldn't that be realistic?
