    Engine break-in at the factory - what OIL do they use?

    Does anyone know what sort of oil is used when the engines are bench tested in the testing chamber? mineral or synthetic oil?

    I am told it's better to use mineral oil during breaking-in. Can anyone confirm this?

    Who told you that? Forget about it. Mobil 1 Full Synthentic oil from the start and you're fine. This is the original factory filling brand.

    Doesn't Ford used some type of break-in oil in their engines? Apparently it should remain in the engine for the break in period. Do other car mfgrs do this? If so what is the logic of doing so?

    I remember a post a while back claiming it was Fuchs?? It's Mobil 1

    The complete name of the last evolution of Mobil 1 is:

    MOBIL 1 Super Syn Technology-Protection Formula SAE 0W-40

    There is also a SAE 0W-50 version,but it isn't indicate for modern Porsche models.

    Don't quote me on any of this, but I believe it is true that thinner break-in oils were used by most manufacturers to accelerate and facilitate break-in and run-in of rings and bearings. You wanted an oil that would quickly facilitate the rings and bearings finding their "profile" with the cylinder walls and cranks and cams. Then dump it, put in clean regular oil, and deliver. The need was a factor of machining and assembly accuracy. Modern techniques and machinery, and much more precision and tolerance in modern engine manufacturing, has eliminated much of the old-school need for the "break-in oil" by certain manufacturers. Your Porsche engine is like a fine watch. It don't need no stinking break-in oil, Muchacho.
