Tried the Turbo at the track today

I got a chance to do a few laps on a 997TT-Tip and a 997TT-Manual the the track today.

First impression is the power delivery, that 2nd gear is brutal. However the track was pouring wet when I went out and the Turbo was interesting to say the least on a very very wet track

First tried the Tip, and at the track I was bummed out the Tip on track driving really pours a cold water jug over the fun IMO, the lag, the selection of gears, the lack of clutch, etc. it ruined the car for me. I'd rather drive a manual Boxster than a 997TT-Tip in the track that is.

But then jumped into the manual and was great. I found that I was better at heel-toe on the Carrera than the Turbo, and couldn't say why, it was just that way, maybe the turbo lag I don't know. Going through the gears in acceleration was a joy, it pulls and pulls and pulls some more.

Handling was very good, didn't feel the extra weight, but the track was very wet and the traction limit was much lower so harder to tell the difference. The exit of the corners I was faster with the Carrera than with the Turbo, simply because I was able to plant down power earlier and more because the Carrera had less power and more lineal delivery. The Turbo was so brutal that the rear was wanting to step out as soon as you were in the throttle. There was definately no understeer whatsoever in the exits, whe you started to brake traction is was always and all at the rear. Then again it was wet so maybe in dry it was different.

Definately gets an A+ because it was sporty handling (no understeer from the AWD), and its was very agile inspite of the extra weight. And of course the acceleration was fantastic. Of course this personal conclusion was at a track, not street, and very wet conditions. In fact is was so wet that even a AWD C4S I tried was easily oversteering on certain corners with standing water on the exits.

Re: Tried the Turbo at the track today

I found my turbo on a track here in Greece a little bit heavy in short corners.. The only way to drive a tip turbo on a track is on Manual mode.. But again it is a little bit tricky in the start and of course with no Fun..
The only good part of a tip turbo is that with 3rd gear you can go up to 196 km/h (redline) So most of times you are with 2nd gear or 3rd..

So the PTM does really work in wet conditions too

    Carlos,

You MUST try the 997TT manual again in dry weather-then you'll be hooked.

And then you'll be tempted to mod. it too.

I just picked up my 996TSCab with the GT700 (EVO/GIAC/Garrett hybrid turbo's in K16 housings) upgrade and all I can say is "Holy S---!" This is wicked fast. I would say it goes from 0-to-suspended license in about 7 seconds.

Plus I put on the X73 suspension and put in the entire Porsche CF interior option pieces missing from the CF package, including steering wheel, gear shift, center console (plus the CF hazard and ignition surrounds-courtesy of Eric from Bumperplugs). I promise pics this weekend, but a full test drive is a week off since global warming is delayed again with snow in the forecast for the weekend.

But the drive home from the dealer was a riot-first gear from a stop took a couple of stalls to get used to-upgraded to a Sachs level 3 clutch from level 2 to handle the 750lb-ft of torque and it bites as one lets out the clutch. The technique I found that works is to rev it to about 3,000rpm's, then gradually back off the throttle as I let out the clutch and it rolls without chatter or stall-or I can drop the clutch and since the GIAC program allows boost over 1.2BAR in first gear, the car is drag-worthy. And second gear at full boost is ridiculously fast and FUN.

In this case, Garrett internals inside KKK K16 housings, so a veritable "wolf in sheep's clothing." They have a smaller impeller for quick spool-up, but can safely boost to more than 1.3BAR. I plan on dyno-ing the car later this month, but the torque peak is about 500 rpm's earlier than with the K24's from the stock 996 Turbo S.
