    Turbo timer necessary?

    Wonder if necessary to install one....anyone installed? in their previous 996TT??

    Not neccessary considering the VTG technology in the 997...

    OK, help me here. Obviously the name lends itself to what a turbo timer is, but why would it ever be needed?

    a turbo timer minimizes turbo lag by working in conjunction with the ECU

    i thought it was the device that keeps your engine running for a few minutes after you switch off after a hard drive to avoid 'heat soak' or something like that?

    That's because you're right. It's to help prevent the heated turbos from "coking" the oil. And, it does this by keeping the engine running for a timed period after shut down. The duration is determined by how hot the turbos got during the preceding drive.

    I don't have a 997 Turbo yet, but if I did, I would hate to install aftermarket electronic devices due to the complexity of current Porsche cars. Instead I would back off towards the end of a drive and let the engine idle for a while so the turbo will not cook in fried oil.

    Let it run for a minute or two (two is better) before shutting it down.

    Either a couple minutes of idling or driving very moderately a few miles before puttin it away.
