    Re: 2009 F1 - latest situation

Exactly right Shakal! Brawn might be even running illegal cars (it's not prohibited in testing) in order to do those lap times. As Flavio Briatore put it, people without sponsors go for flying laps hoping to get some on board, whereas people with sponsors get on with their programmes. From the testing so far (judging by the long runs - the only semi-dependable sign), Ferrari seems to be ahead with BMW and Toyota following. McLaren is still a questionmark but I doubt that they will fall behind by that much.

McLaren has just confirmed what we have all been thinking - they are really struggling:

I cant wait to see the new season. Since long I'm really curious. The changes to this seasons are huge and the big teams seem to struggle. This is very promissing for an interesting season!

    Re: 2009 F1 - latest situation

Very true - the rule changes have really mixed things up this year - I think it could be a very hard fought season Smiley I'm really excited about the new season too Smiley

Most wins will secure the F1 title plus other rule changes:

    Re: 2009 F1 - latest situation

^^^That's silly. Now F1 is getting out of hand. The driver with the most wins, wins the Driver's Championship?

I always enjoyed the points system because it fairly rewarded consistency and resiliency and podiums throughout an entire season, regardless if you won or didn't.

Not to mention, it made for some interesting strategy and mathmatics in the final races of the year.

But on the brighter side, I see they pulled a page right of the NASCAR media guide book to get rid of some of the chill and iciness fans and media complained about....

On the first day of practice all drivers must be available for autograph signing in their designated team space in the pit lane.

All drivers eliminated in qualifying must make themselves available for media interviews immediately after the end of each session.

Any driver retiring before the end of the race must make himself available for media interviews after his return to the paddock.

All drivers who finish the race outside the top three must make themselves available immediately after the end of the race for media interviews.

Not only NASCAR but most American racing.

    The ALMS has silimilar  rules.

I'ts about time that the European (run) racing organizations understand that it's not all about taking without giving back to the fans.

Oh, you should visit a DTM race, there you can almost sit in the cars

What a total farce - the much talked about change to the points system is being dropped for the 2009 season and will be introduced in 2010 unless a different system is agreed during the course of 2009. The winner of the most races will no longer be the automatic winner of the F1 Drivers title. It's back to the 2008 system for 2009.

I believe that consistency should be rewarded not just wins. A good driver for me is not always the all out "win at all costs" driver but one with strategy, adaptabilty and why not a cunning operator that can finish races which he cannot win.

However, the points gap between P1 and P2 should be greater IMO. Maybe P2 being half the points of P1 and there should be bonus points for Pole and Fastest Lap.

    Re: 2009 F1 - latest situation

If pursued, we could see the championship concluded in the first 7 races (the likely hood that two people will win 7 race consecutive is statistically seen extremely low).

That's a good point! They should balance race-wins and consistency but the competition should not be over too soon.

Did anyone figure out how past seasons would have ended with the new system?

    Re: 2009 F1 - latest situation

@reginos: IMO the most wins approach was wrong from the beginning. By 'farce' I was referring to the way the system was changed with only a week before the season begins.

I entirely agree. I would like the points system to be 14-10-7-5-4-3-2-1.

But 12-9-7-5-4-3-2-1 (FOTA's original suggestion) has already been rejected by the World Motorsports Council & the FIA so little hope for an easy solution....

    Re: 2009 F1 - latest situation

I don't think doing this exercise is 100% correct, because competitors would behave differently if the rules were different. Like Lauda once said "give me the rules and I'll race accordingly"

You might remember when in football a win was 2 points and a draw 1. You cannot go back amd apply the 3-1 rule to those championships, because at that time many teams played for a draw as they had less to lose.

Mosley is not interested in money. He comes from an affluent family, unlike Bernie and is not even paid as the President of the FIA. Power and women with whips turn him on instead of money. Smiley
