Re: Porsche designer moves to China

Interesting find and I wonder why he left Porsche, there seems to have been some sort of disagreement as far as I heard but rumors don't always have to be true, right?! One rumor indicates that he had hopes for getting promoted head of the Porsche design department to replace Micheael Mauer but apparently, it didn't happen. Another rumor indicates that he was in disagreement with Mr. Mauer about the future design of new Porsche products.

Whatever is true, it is sad that Porsche lost a good designer.

The Chinese are eager to upgrade their motor industry fast.  I am sure he was offered a package, Porsche were not willing to match.

Leaving a company like Porsche for a newbie in China is kind of closing the doors behind you for a designer. No matter how successful he will be, he will never earn the reputation necessary to move up in the food chain. This is it.

Re: Porsche designer moves to China

My guess is that he had to go. Personally I think the 918's design is its weak spot. Technical concept is great, but the design is boring and already dated (maybe because they are showing it around for ages).

Re: Porsche designer moves to China

I see it the complete opposit zzboba.

Personally I think the 918 hits the sweet spot of a future Porsche design!

The fact that it is already boring I brought up 2 years ago when the hype was still on. Then I stated "what a pity - they show it today knowing it will be released in 2014.... until then it is boring".

Re: Porsche designer moves to China

The 918 is not a series production car and therefore to collect orders, Porsche had to demonstrate the car well in advance.

Porsche wouldn't be able to achieve their substantial 2000 declarations of  interest (and deposits, I presume) without showing the car.

I don't think any of the lucky 918 future owners, would consider their car as boring. Different attitude applies compared to normal cars. It is not as if the new Golf or new 3-series are shown two years before production. On the contrary the advance viewing of hypercars generates lots of anticipation and full expectancy on behalf of those who can afford them.

BTW Michael Mauer is credited as the designer of the 918 instead of the person who has left Porsche.

The Chinese are hoping to capture some of the same mojo as Kia did with Peter Schreyer...
