Replacing the wing with retractible spoiler

Will Porsche Exclusive slap on a non-Turbo 997 retractible spoiler on the TT rear deck for a..., ahem..., "reasonable" (LOL) price?

Yeah, sure, the aerodynamics at 160mph+ might be effected, but how about straight line perf at 130-140mph?

It would seem the actuator wiring and sensors would be about the same as a normal aspirated 997.

Is there a problem with bulky TT engine components (aircleaner etc) that would prevent the modification?

I can't figure out of that wing is stylistic thing or absolutely the only solution to the problem of aerodynamics and physical/mechanical engine characteristics.

For the sake of discrete daily driving it would be nice if the big wing could be removed and the normal 997/S retractible spoiler could be fitted.

Room shouldn't be a problem, as there is a C4S-look 996TT driving around Germany. Regarding custom fabrication, just ask RC what Porsche Exclusive regard as a "reasonable" price .

LOL. Yes. Riiiiight. I'm sure it's gonna be about three times the amount I would pay but would be pi**ed to have to pay. It's like you have to be a Rock or Movie Star to do the "Porsche Exclusive" thing.

Anyway it's encouraging that you believe it can be done... . Maybe it's on the totally opposite extreme from Porscche Exclusive: just pick one up in the salvage yard and bolt it on?!

Re: Replacing the wing with retractible spoiler

do it aftermarket? hopefully the engine panel is the same dimension as the other models?

i'm sure one of the aftermarket tuners will offer a spoilerless solution - but aerodynamics are part of the safety of the car, it would be a safety issue to modify only the rear without changing the front.

Re: Replacing the wing with retractible spoiler

You'd also probably have to pay increased insurance for modifying the car.

Re: Replacing the wing with retractible spoiler

And the third brake light? In the turbo it is integrated in the wing, in the Carrera it is under the windshield, isn't it?

Yeah, the Carrera's brake light is in one of the ventilation slats above the engine lid panel. IOW, you have about six slats back there and if you un bolt and remove the engine cover you'll have two slats still attached to the car; brake light is in lower one of the two.

I don't hate the 997TT wing; I've seen it just a few times; looks okayyyyyy... . I guess when I get the car it might be smarter just to get used to it.

It's just that the TT car is already a HUGE overstatement to people who know cars but having the wing on it just gets more unwanted attention from the general public (and the people who know me from the parking lots I routinely use).

I guess it is payback time because I've seen wings in wannabe Pontiacs and other goofy cars and have often ridiculed them... .

Definitely an issue to be raised.

My guiding thought is maximum license-losing, in-the-USA, straight-line speeds around 130-140 mph with Carrera retractible spoiler.

Re: Replacing the wing with retractible spoiler

Just get an S then, almost as fast and no wing to think about.

Nah..., thanks though, I have a 06 997S and have gotten bitten by Turbo bug.

Here's another way to enjoy wings (pun).

Re: Replacing the wing with retractible spoiler

Great pic, but I think you're stuck with the wing.

    discrete

You have air intakes on the side
    LED flashers in the front
    Exhaust tips thru the bumper

Re: Replacing the wing with retractible spoiler

In general I do not like spoilers either but I think the new Turbo wing is ok. I too prefer the fluid standard line but I really think Porsche will never do it because of aerodynamic balance. So best is to just accept it.

Re: Replacing the wing with retractible spoiler

The TT wing looks a lot more overstated in pictures than it does in person (IMHO). That being said, I agree with MMD ... if you're never going to hit max speed, then why draw the extra attention? The base rear is great looking without the wing.

Re: Replacing the wing with retractible spoiler

FWIW, I'm now betting the darn thing is exactly replaceable with a Carrera retractible spoiler/engine lid. You'd have to get the turbo air cleaner flanges for bottom of engine lid, the center brake light slat, probably just plug and play the spoiler/wing actuator.

Seems like it would be a top engineering/design priority for Porsche to interchange as many parts as possible between 997 models.
