    2005 Build Quality

In the August Issue of PCA's Panorama magazine, in 'Street Talk,' the first item discusses the most current J. D. Power Initial Quality Survey. It cites that Porsche 'tops the list' with the least number of customer-reported problems of all autos. It also says that 'Apparently Porsche learned from the 2005 experience,' contrasting that year's quality with this year's.

Since I own a 2005 997, this concerns me. Is it something everyone knows and that I missed - that the 2005 models are NOT quality products?

I wonder if those of you out there who know these cars year-to-year have anything to add to this?

What about you 2005 997 owners?

My car had lots of early electrical problems, but after the 'main' sending unit (?) was replaced, everything works fine. I wonder if I should anticipate any problems that others might know about with the 2005 models?

    Thanks

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

I just had to get my pressure plate replaced from a manufacturing defect, only 1800 miles on the car!. Porsche quality must be going down the drain!

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

I have had a C2S which was 2005 model year and now have a C4S 2006 model year.
My exerience, and of course it is only one car of each is that quality has improved.
My 05 had a camshaft oil seal leak, used a fair amount of oil (within tolerance) and has since I sold it been to the dealer to have a power steering fluid leak resolved. There was a noticible exaust pipe rattle on cold start up (which I did not mind but led to at least three people suggesting to me that my exaust needed attention). There was also the occasional but fairly disconcerting PASM hop on fast tight bends, casued as I understand it by the suspension adjusting. It was recalled for a gear linkage adjustment and new exaust tail pipes (I cannot recall if this stopped the rattle)I had it for about 20,000 miles and saw it through its first service (nothing required) I considered it very reliable indeed.
The 06 C4S, has none of these problems (up to 6,000 miles now), but was delayed due to a sensor problem picked up at predelivery inspection. It certainly gives me the impression of a better build.

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

The year over year JD Power results take into consideration the entire Porsche product line including the Cayenne which has had its share of quality concerns. Had the results been specific to the Carrera, the improvement in year over year results would have likely been insignificant. The 997 Carrera, 2005 or 2006 remains one of the highest in initial quality for all models measured by JDP&A.

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

I bought the Launch car (sept 05) so one of the first cars out of the factory. I Did not have a single issue with it. Not One. I just traded it in on a 07 Turbo, also one of the first ones and i hope my experience is the same

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

Same here, my 997 was one of the first ones and I have not had any problems with it. I hope my next P-car will give me the same experience.

I think you're reading into that report. Recall that Porsche did not win in 2005 and lost out to Lexus or someone like that. They were determined to take it up a notch to secure the top position.

Keep in mind that the difference between first place and second is virtually nada,--nothing. The quality at that level is first rate. I would never worry about that. Besides, the Cayman S is given high marks as well and 06 was its first year out. Generally we used to think that the first year's production of a model was something to avoid. I believe that manufacturing techniques and processes are so advanced now that that sort of thinking is behind us. How could the Cayman do so well in its first year? They have this whole thing down, that's it.

    Don't worry!

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

I have an '05 that has been plagued with problems, from creaky windows to loose trim to significant mechanical issues (camshaft problems, etc...) that took 'regional' Porsche mechanics to figure out. I could have lemoned the car, but PCNA gave me $$$ not to lemon the car and to compensate me for the 30+ days it was out of service during its first year.

I'm glad I leased the car, because it's going right back to Porsche (and into the hands of some unknowing and unsuspecting buyer) in a year. Caveat Emptor.

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

Note that the study that Porsche is at the top of is the Initial Quality Study, which is a measure of issues reported within first 90 days of ownership. It is not a ranking of quality overall.

The study for long term issues is the Vehicle Dependability Study. In this study, Porsche ranked 23rd, which is the dependability being lower than the industry average.

That would make sense, as the initial quality of my car was flawless...it just took longer than 90 days for the problems to manifest themselves.

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

I also have a 2005 launch vehicle and have not had a single issue with this car. It is perfect. Seems like Porsche made sure that the intro models were problem free.

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

I took delivery on 20 Nov 2004. I believe it was the seventh 997 delivered from my dealer. I had a missing rain sensor installed, a rear main oil seal replaced. Exhaust tips and shifter cables were replaced under recall. The milage is now at 21,350. The car has seen 11 track days and 162 on the speedo. I have no regrets about the build quality.

What is considered a 'launch vehicle?' Mine was delivered February 28, 2005.

RMS issue!!! I'd say that WAS cause for concern.

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

I remember that there were plenty of electrical gremlins on the 05's and posts regarding those have just stopped. Also, there were design changes that continued to be made, including a new sunroof wind deflector in 06 - who knows what others.

It simply makes sense that the first year of a new model will have more issues with design and quality than later years. That's just a given. Of course, that doesn't mean that every 05 997 is cursed, but if I were in the market for a pre-owned 997 (or any car for that matter), I'd avoid the first year out.

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

Launch vehicles in the US were a special batch of BLK/BLK 997S cars. They all had BOSE, NAV, PCCB, Sports Chrono. All were the same - great combination at $99,700 sticker. All delivered in Aug/Sept. 04. Mine is going strong with 38,000 miles on it and getting quicker every day. 100% reliable.

    Re: 2005 Build Quality

Ordered 11/04. Delivery 4/05. 19k miles to date. Flawless!
