    Thursday 3 December 2009

    Tuesday 26 January 2010

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

It's a bit late for me - I pick up mine next week so it better be good.

Not been to one of these events before and its a good few hours driving to get there but quite tempted to use one of porsches cars for an hour or so to get an understanding of what the cars can really do

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

    Welcome to the forum sunflower123

Looking forward to read about your impressions

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

I won't be going in December - notice is too short.  But I'm definitely up for the January dates....

Anyone else received their dates yet?

    John

There's quite a few of us there on the 26th, however I think that date is now fully subscribed.

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

    John,

Sorry I should of made it clearer, its mainly through the guys on PCGB forum where the 997 chat is quite active - but certainly not as active as here.

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

Wish I could join the test drive as I am curious what PDK feels like in a Turbo. Bet you'll have the sensation of blood rushing backwards. 0-60 in 3 flat has not happened often until now.

I also wonder about the new suspension. From the spring rate info, 997.2 Turbo is still on the soft side but is an improvement over the old car. (The new rear spring rate is about between that of  997.1 and Bilstein, and with PTV the front and rear anti-sway bar are both stiffer. Imagine that... just like what the amateur modders have been doing. Smiley)

    Have fun and please report.

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

I was offered the same dates but they're all booked so I'm now going on 2nd Feb on the 9.50am slot. Let me know if you end up on the same one.

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

For anyone lucky enough to get a test drive on this car, the type of info that would be of interest IMHO would be:

    1. Test car with and without PTV. Any difference? The PTV car should be more tail happy (oversteer more).
    2. Dynamic Engine Mounts: Easily noticeable difference on versus off? Noise & stiffness?
    3. Test drive the manual version of this car. We all know the PDK version is a stunningly fast rocket launcher, but so far almost no comment on the manual car. Without PDK, how does the new car feel with respect to power, spool up (power kicks in at 3000 in 997.1), and lag?
    4. Sit in PDK car as passenger with professional driver. How many minutes before you want to jump out of the car ?

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

    Hi John,

Although I have not had an invite to test the Turbo at Silverstone, I did drive it today for 45 mins.

Would love to have got an invite for Silverstone and met up, but I'm obviously not as high a profile as Pro Golfers.

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

I have had the car for 3 weeks now and only managed just under 600 miles. I opted for the cabriolet replacing a gen 1 turbo coupe which I had for approx 2.5 years which was pretty much faultless albeit that this only clocked up 12k . The cab was specd with pdk with flappy paddles, sports chrono, torque vectoring and a few other bits and pieces which soon adds rapidly to the price.

I have not really driven the car terribly hard to date and probably need to accumalate a few more miles. Initial impressions

PDK with the turbo is unsurprisingly rather good. I also have an M3 with a similiar gearbox which does most of the mile munching and the porsche system is better and easier to use and smoother overall. The speed piles on deceptively but relentlessly almost free from any lag. I know that there has been a lot of comments on the new v old engine and the longeveity or otherwise of the new engine together with the ability to increase the power availiable from various modifications. I am not technically qualified to give a real opinion and/or probably keep cars long enough to suffer long term reliability issues. However I suspect that the new engine standard with PDK will make the car significantly quicker in the real world for most users. We will have to wait and see on long term reliability. I have not tried the launch control system yet although the sales team at the OPC who had recently returned from a familiarisation trip to germany said that they had been treated to repeated runs on cars that had less than 300 miles on the clock and that the system can be used 'relentlessly'. i would feel safer with a few more miles on the clock.

The car seems less fidgety under acceleration and more planted on the road than the gen 1 although given its been driven relatively moderately it might not be comparing apples with apples. It feels slightly sharper when cornering again caveated by the lack of really vigorous driving

The exhaust note sounds much richer than the gen1 helped no doubt by the fabric roof inside the car  The materials generally inside the cabin feel slightly better than the gen 1 - the leather slightly softer and the sat nav with bluetooth first rate. Bluetooth in particular is better than the BMW systems . Its not probably what most people buy a porsche for but really does indicate how real world practical they are.

I was not really sure about a soft top but to date it feels pretty solid and I am not a good enough driver to probably exploit the differences between the coupe and cabriolet so looking forward to the 3 days it does not rain in the North West of England.

Overall very happy with the car and looking forward to piling on a few more miles and having a real play with the launch control. It does feel an improvement over the 'old' car, helped no doubt by the fact that it is new and one typically feels, at least for a period, well disposed to 'new' things.

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

Thanks Sunflower - interesting initial impressions..

What colour did you choose and any chance of some pics??

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

No photos as yet - I have only just got some of the 2 year plus gen 1 turbo I sold a few  months ago. I opted for

    Meteor grey

    Natural carrera red interior

    Black softtop

PDK with padddles and sports chrono plus

    Porsche Torque Vectoring

    Adaptive sports seats

    Side skirts painted

    Standard wheels

    Illuminated sills

    Embossed seats

    Heated Seats

    Floor mats!!!!!

    Passenger airbag deactivation

Ipod, phone etc all now come as 'standard'

I did not really go too overboard with the options list with half the cost of the extras probaly the gearbox, sports chronoplus and the paddles ipod connection and the phone connectivity etc are now included in the base cost.

Still very pleased with it although the recent weather has meant that its still being driven pretty much in running in mode

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

    Great spec'.....Looking forward to photos..

Love the grey/red combo.  I believe it's the one shown on the Porsche Web site featuring the new FL turbo.  Beautiful...

Re: Invite to test new Turbo...

The dealer called today - the car has to go in to have a software update for the PDK box. Not sure yet what exactly the update is going to fix. I have not noticed anything driving it.
