Re: Porsche 918 Spyder at Geneva... (Chris Harris)

I believe that the classification of gasoline, diesel and hybrid drivetrains will be decisive for future motorsport plans in general and especially for Porsche. Diesel would not work for them, in terms of philosophy and development backlog in comparison to Peugeot and Audi, certainly much more appropriate for the latter. The development of a gasoline LMP1 does not make sense to me in this scenario.

Regarding the RS Spyder, it is sad to see that such a marvellous car´s performance is constantly narrowed down.

Thank you Ron.  Yes I was running a web site called HobbyStage back then.  I guess Funcarsonline is kind of dead right now...

Good to be here and I am glad to catch up with RC and others after all these years.

Re: Porsche 918 Spyder at Geneva... (Chris Harris)

Hi Blaise, I thought that was you Smiley.  I remember you and RC were one of the first ones in '00 or '01 that got the new 996TT.  I do remember HobbyStage that was a cool site for all sorts of hobbies.

    Good to see you.

If you want one, better get on a list.  A pal of mine from California has already sent his intent of interest  into PCNA, and is also first on his dealer's list.  Folks were even signing up at the Geneva show.  CGT is fabulous, but 918 (if built) will be knockout sensational.

Re: Porsche 918 Spyder at Geneva... (Chris Harris)

Nobody on this thead talks about price  for the 918? Smiley Hello, is recession over for you guys?

Let's not get too excited until we see the final price tag. Everything > 450.000 USD would be over the top, 200-300 TUSD would be as awesome as the car but i doubt Porsche will offer anything south of 400 TUSD.

So, if you give a deposit for the car, also indicate the price range you think is fair and you are willing to pay. I hope Porsche is listening to their customers.

Possibly.  This is the info I received:

"... "So far, no final decision has been made on whether to build a series sports car version of the Porsche 918 Spyder. No definite sales date or recommended price has yet been set. At present, it seems likely the derived production sports car will be offered as a limited edition."

I'm sending this message 1) because I think you're interested in following some of the exciting things Porsche's got in the works - much of which finds its say into everyday Porsches.

And 2) just in case you think you might actually want one. We're guessing, but we think that if the 918 goes into production its price, depending on production numbers, will be somewhere above $500,000.

Please let me know if you have any questions about anything Porsche - and certainly do let me know if you think you might want a 918. If so, we will let Porsche know of your interest. ..."

Re: Porsche 918 Spyder at Geneva... (Chris Harris)

My info is that the car will be less than $500K.  Porsche well knows that the McLaren SLR sold far fewer than scheduled, and the resale values are awful.

At CGT prices, the 918 will be snapped up.  For some folks (not me), laying out that kind of money is no problem...

yes but the problem imho was no limited edition for slr (and remeber c gt limit was 1500 but then was reducted to 1250 - maybe less customers than forecasted?)

Moss had a weird accident this month.

On 7 March 2010 Moss broke both ankles, broke four bones in a foot, chipped four vertebrae and suffered skin damage in an accident at his home when he fell down a lift shaft. He is expected to fully recover.

Perhaps this is  to make him feel better!

He reminds me of myself at that age, only difference was I had to use paper. PS didn't exist! Let's hope it comes to fruition in 2012 and races. I will definitely be at Le Mans if it does.

Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid: 900 Potential Buyers Found, 100 More Needed...

    porsche-918spyder-front.jpg

    (26 April 2010)

    Just the Facts:

    • Porsche already has 900 potential buyers for the 918 Spyder Hybrid concept.
    • The automaker needs at least 1,000 interested buyers to make a business case for production.
    • 918 Spyder Hybrid debuted at the Geneva auto show last month.

STUTTGART, Germany — Porsche's list has reportedly close to 900 prospective buyers on it for the 918 Spyder Hybrid and the automaker may build the car once 1,000 have stepped forward. Porsche development chief Wolfgang Durheimer told Bloomberg News that "a sound business case" would be proven if 1,000 serious buyers are waiting in the wings for the new hybrid.

The Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid debuted at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show in March. It's a two-seater with a 500-plus-horsepower V8, based on the RS Spyder racing car's engine, teamed with electric motors that make an overall 218 hp and a lithium-ion battery. The hybrid has a seven-speed PDK double-clutch gearbox.

The racing-car-styled 918 Spyder Hybrid has a lightweight monocoque body made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic and weighs about 3,285 pounds overall.

Inside Line says: No doubt there are many reasons to want this car.

    Wolfgang Duerheimer: Porsche development chief...

“I’m confident that we will soon reach the threshold of 1,000,” Wolfgang Duerheimer said in an April 24 interview at the Beijing Auto Show. “We need 1,000 seriously interested people to make a sound business case.”

Porsche, based in Stuttgart, Germany, plans to add models with a goal of doubling yearly sales to as many as 150,000 vehicles over the medium term, and benefit from savings from a merger with Volkswagen AG. The two carmakers will conclude their talks on a future model strategy and sharing platforms in about six months, Duerheimer said.

“We’re very optimistic that we’ll be able to further expand our leading position in the sports-car segment,” he said.

Porsche expects sales in China, its third-biggest market after the US and Germany, to “clearly exceed” 10,000 vehicles this year, compared with 9,900 in 2009, Duerheimer said. The new generation of the Porsche Cayenne has “very good” prospects in China and order books for the Panamera sedan are “well stocked,” he said.

Porsche aims to double its Chinese dealerships by 2012 to more than 50 from 27 currently, he said. “We expect that the desire for motorization in China will continue unabated,” Duerheimer said.

What are the two black "shoe soles" rising out of the engine cowls?  Some sort of better intake for air cooling?

Re: Porsche 918 Spyder at Geneva... (Chris Harris)

Yes, they rise up when the car is at speed. (They should NEVER take a picture of the car with the air intakes risen whilst the car is stationary)

Re: Porsche 918 Spyder at Geneva... (Chris Harris)

Yup, ram air ducts to provide more air.

Note that the car is in high-speed mode on these pictures; also the rear wing is risen from it's notmal position over the rear light cluster into the more upright position.
