    Master-RSR Course!

I guess I will put this thread here, since I drove a race car! Smiley

As you all read, I spent this past weekend in Leipzig, first to visit the factory then attending the Master-RSR course.

The course is actually a made up course, Porsche originally scheduled a 918 driving course, but due to low signup, they canceled that, but put in place a Master-RSR course instead. Normal attendance is 12 students, this one only has 5, 3 of those 918 owners who were scheduled to to the 918 course. The other 2 were our new member, The farmer, and another gentleman that he happened to know from another Porsche driving school, small world. But this course was basically started for the 918 owners.

Leipzig facility is beautiful from the air:

Porsche brought along 4 Cup cars, one of those spare, the other 3 were customized for us, names on the car and even the pit boxes were labelled. Very cool.

The garage is also nicely decorated.

Boxes and boxes of stuff for the Cup car:

Since one needs the full race gear to drive the Cup car, Porsche brought along the mobile wardrobe box:

The GT3RS assigned to us, there were more of them on the outside parking lot, all in all, I think Porsche had 20 GT3RS production cars in Leipzig. They will be sold after they are done with them.

    Re: Master-RSR Course!

Porsche sent Timo Bernhard to be our guest instructor, he personally setup the cars for us:

    IMG_8306.JPG

Porsche also had a film crew on hand to record the whole 2 day course, I believe they will use the footage later for promotion for their driving school. Timo did quite few interviews with them, and we the participants also got interviewed, at times when we just parked and trying to get our of the car, and in the process of taking off the race gear, just like those interview in races we saw on TV.

The Cup car is actually not a bad office to be in, quite comfortable actually once one got seated and properly strapped in.

A peek 'under the hood', but not much to see other than the giant air cleaner :

    IMG_8313.JPG

First day was cloudy, a bit windy but not too cold, the instructors loved it, the engine loves the cold air and the track is just grippy enough. One of the works driver, on a hot lap lead-chase session Saturday afternoon, set the fastest time on the Leipzig course in a GT3RS, 1:41 and a little. For comparison, Cup car will lap the circuit 1:36 all day along. (They drives the GT3RS instructor cars while we chase in the Cup car) (Should be quite safe, but more on that later) (Saturday morning we had to share the course with the factory production people, they had half the course for testing of production cars, every car rolls off the line gets tested there, we get the whole course in the afternoon and all of Sunday)

    Re: Master-RSR Course!

Sunday we started off a nice sunny, but cold morning, but by lunch time, the rain cloud rolled in, it started raining and then SNOWING.

    IMG_8317.JPG

IMG_8318.JPGThat's snow flakes melting on my sleeve!

Being Porsche, they are prepared, especially when Timo brought the Silverstone WEC weekend with him back to Leipzig.

    Out comes the rain tires.

    IMG_8316.JPG

We also spent some time doing drifting in the handling circle in the GT3RS too:

    IMG_8322.JPG

I didn't spent much time wit the rain tires, my partner The Farmer hogs the car. But I did get a special moment that not many can experience.

I only spent 2 laps on the rain tires, and the track is already drying up and no more wet patches for me to go over and cool the tires. I got radioed in for a tire change. Little did I know what they had planned. Instead of going into the garage,  they had lined up fro a race pitstop! Full crew at 4 corners. On goes the air hose for the air jack, zip zip zip zip off goes the 4 wet and zip zip zip zip on goes 4 slicks. Since I was in the car, I don't have pictures of that but I think The Farmer has. The film crew also filmed the whole thing. And other visitors to the Leipzig facility on that day too. Of course, being the dumb dumb that I am, I stalled it heading off, twice. haha.

In the end, the sun returned for a beautiful finish.

    IMG_8325.JPG

We mentioned before, The Farmer and I shared a car, we were the only one that finished. His friend fell victim to the entry procedure of the Cup car, think he hurt his knee the first day climbing in and out, he missed the Sunday morning session but rejoined us in the GT3RS in the afternoon. He was a very capable driver to be honest, actually lapped me in the Cup car while driving the GT3RS. Impressive to say the least. Or that I was exceptionally slow. laugh Probably that, as I had created a new entry line for Victoria turn, it's was so out there that it shocked everyone. Let's just say it was a deep V, very deep V for Victoria, and I wasn't describing clothing on a girl.

The other 'retiree', well that was interesting to say the least.  One of the driver of the car went off course on Saturday, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, the damage wasn't too bad, and the car was repaired overnight. Come Sunday morning, the other driver finished the job. Retiring it for good. The had to switch to the backup car. I was on the track at that time but The Farmer was in the pits and they basically heard tire squeals, then thump thump thump. Not a good feeling but the safety equipment did their job, he walked away without a scratch, well perhaps a bit on his ego and wallet, but that's about it.

So yeah, The Farmer and I weren't the quickest, but we were the last men standing.

    Re: Master-RSR Course!

    Almost forgot something funny.

So I said Timo was the one setting the car up.

He was of a very small build, proper race car driver size.

He needs extra padding in the seat, and on Sunday when I jumped in the car after him, no one noticed the padding were still there, I was complaining that the seat feels extra tight today, I was accused of eating too much for dinner the night before. laugh

Finally we found his padding were still on, while I can still fit with those on, I had to share the car with The Farmer, and he has no chance of sitting in those, and the decision was made to take them out.

    Nice write-up, thank you.

Concerning the extra body weight, this is always the reason I start laughing when some guys at a Porsche Club sport event complain about the weight of their car and how they saved 2 kilos on a lighter exhaust, but hardly manage to fit their bellies into the race suits. Smiley

By the way, did Porsche somehow comment on the - to me, high, "retiring rate" ? Usually, if something like what you described happens, we are all summoned for an extra 1/2 hour round of coffee in the pits...

    Re: Master-RSR Course!

We did spent 30mins in the pits, but it was because of the 'clean up'.

instead of prep talk, we posed for photoshoots with the film crew.

Nice report. Thanks for sharing kiss

I have been asked if I wanted to test the cup car, and while it certainly is temting, I cannot see what it will do me good as I normally race frontwheel driven cars....but who knows, the temptation might just be to big.

    Re: Master-RSR Course!

Spent some time in Leipzig last september. Not driving the track though...

Really enjoyed your report Whoopsy. Danke!

    Re: Master-RSR Course!

Towards the end of of the year, November, Porsche will host not 1 but 2 sessions of 918 training at Portimao, and before those they are doing another Master-RSR course.

There was overwhelming responses from the 918 owners for the training course, 12 spots were filled out in 10 mins. With the long wait list they have decided to get another session going there.

I will be there again, for the 918 part, deciding whether to do the Master-RSR again there.
