Black dials come with black sport chrono dial

The look is consistent. However with the other (red, yellow, sand, etc.) colored dials the sports chrono dial is in the standard color for that model. So base 997 the sport chrono dial would be black, and with the 997 S it would be in white.

I really should try to find uses for that clock!

One guy used it to time how long he had to wait for his wife while she shopped.

Another used it to shave seconds off his urban commute to work.

I suppose it would be nice to time how long you wait for a bridge to open and close.

    any other ideas?

    ROFL

    > Time how long it takes for my wife to get ready to drive out! (Before work)

    > time how long it takes for my wife to get pissed at my driving! (Driving to work)

    > Time How long it takes for my wife get out of the office! (after work)

    > time how long it takes my wife to notice that I'm still in the garage late at night (Not even working! )

    69Bossnine,
Do you have a picture of your interior? I'm considering the package you ordered, but would like to see what it looks like.
    Thanks

    pcosta,

I'm pretty sure he does- check his previous posts/pics when he received his car (around March/April).

Stradale, I have that package. And the Porsche description is EXTREMELY misleading and confusing. What you are referring to is the E36 package, MSRP $1550.00. The only "aluminum-look" piece you get that is different than what comes standard is the instrument-surround. Everything else they list, you are correct, already comes in aluminum-look. So it's very redundant.

As for the extra leather, YES, the air-vent slats on ALL air vents are done in leather, to match the rest of your leather. In other words, my air-vent slats are covered in Terracotta leather. It really looks great. Furthermore, instead of bare plastic, the E36 package also gives you stitched leather on your defroster trim under the windshield, and a nifty stitched leather trim around your center dash speaker. All in all I think it's a great package. Whether or not it's worth $1550 is debatable, but I'd do it again.

But it IS weird that they call it an "aluminum look" package, when it really has more to do with additional leather trimming. I have a theory on this. My theory is that the 997 was originally not intended to have all of that aluminum look trim around the air vents as standard equipment. When Porsche executives saw the proposed E36 package in a pre-production car, they thought the aluminum trim looked dynamite, and made a last-minute decision to make it standard on all 997's, rather than optional, because the aluminum plastic probably doesn't cost them a dime more than any other color plastic. But they still retained the "E36" package as an option, so that they could still offer the leather-covered vents and the leather covered upper-dash trim as an upgrade package, as well as adding the aluminum-look gauge surround, which I'm guessing they thought might be a bit over-the-top to have as standard. That's PURELY a theory, but I can think of no other explanation for the confusion and the redundancy of the E36 package, as it is described in the ordering literature.

    Thanks a lot 69bossnine.
I just saw that option in your gallery
I know exactly what the package is about now. I'm already thinking about specs on a 997 TT Cab and if it doesn't already come with the leather around the defroster and loudspeaker trim I'm going to get that package. On the vent slats it's probably even nicer with a color other than black. Next time around I'm definately going w/ the leather rear consule so the added stitching as you described is something I want.

I thought that was the case with the aluminum vents.

Nothing on the idea of making the panel around the navigation aluminum ? In the pic below the panel looks Aluminum -

Thanks~ So with an S if you order black dials they automatically change the sport chrono to black.

Re: instrument color on S - aluminum look or black

The air vents on the 3.6 Carrera are painted in Vulcan Grey, just like the PCM face plate. Only the S gets the free Aluminium air vents.

Btw 69bossnine, I was wondering how well the Vulcan Grey PCM face plate and the silver Adaptative seat backs fit in a terracotta interior. I'm planning to get a 997 Targa 4S next year, but I'm still hesitating between Slate / Black & Terracotta, and Midnight Blue / Black & Sand Beige. I wil be getting the leather vents and rear console upgrades, so the those two parts will pretty much be the only non-leather parts inside.
Does the fact the interior uses different shades of gray bother you, or am I worrying too much about nothing?

(if anyone got a car with adaptative seats and a sand beige interior, I'd like to hear your opinion, too )

(FYI I prefer to get a black dashboard because of reflections on the windshield, and light seats because seats get real hot real fast with the glass roof - hence the two-tone interior)

Re: instrument color on S - aluminum look or black

The Vulcan grey looks outstanding with the Terracotta, and everything mixed together all compliments fantastically, in my opinion. Regarding the two shades of "silver" (Vulcan grey PCM plate and seat backs surrounded by brighter Aluminum-look trim), They compliment each other well and give dimension and depth to the interior. It all flows well, and looks like it SHOULD be that way. In the 50's and 60's, the U.S. was manufacturing some of the most stunning automobile interiors in the world, using multitudes of shades and complimenting color combinations. Designers used layers of shades to create perceived shadow and depth, and numerous metal finishes, to achieve a desired depth and warmth. When you have an interior where EVERYTHING is an exact match, a single shade and color, you lose that dimension and depth, and everything starts to look flat and 1-dimensional and overpowering. If all of the metal-look trim in my interior was a matching color, the interior would instantly look cheap and blinding. So, hopefully that answers your question. My interior combo, Terracotta/Vulcan/Aluminum, to my eyes, is a grand-slam. As for the dash, I've never noticed or perceived ANY relection issues with my Terracotta dash. Be careful with the Terracotta. You mix in too much black, and it starts looking like a Halloween decoration. Sometimes it's best to look back when cars were more about art than engineering, to see how many different materials can come together to make something beautiful without being disjointed or cluttered. Below, I've posted a fastastic example of the use of multiple colors and surfaces and textures in an auto interior...

Re: instrument color on S - aluminum look or black

    And another..

Re: instrument color on S - aluminum look or black

And another... General Motors really had it "going on" in the 50's and 60's, ya know???

Re: instrument color on S - aluminum look or black

Thank you very much for your input. If you're not getting any bad reflections under the Floridan sun, I guess I'll be fine with a full terracotta interior.
You convinced me, now I just have to find out whether I want the full leather air vents, or the leather + alu package you selected.

Are those pictures pictures of your car collection? They really look awesome!

Re: instrument color on S - aluminum look or black

Yes, my father and I collect together. Thanks!

    Geez, niiiiice work!

I hav a question about quality. I bet those earlier cars score very high on "fit and finish."

Amazing considering how complex (many parts, complex fitments) they are by today's standards.

Also, I guess the passage of time changes my perception but those interiors are really beautiful!

    WOW!

    Thanks for the pics.

Re: instrument color on S - aluminum look or black

Regarding fit and finish, no, they don't score very high. RESTORED cars are the ones you see finished and fit to world-class and artistic standard. But original, low-mile unrestored cars don't reflect near the consistancy and uniformity of fit and finish that we enjoy today. Also, the exterior styling is so much different, with so much shape and contour, that the gaps don't stick out like a sore-thumb as they would when you mate a flat surface to a flat surface. Restorers do their best to achieve perfection, but the styles are so dramatic, that it's hard to notice when a panel runs 1/16" out of score from top to middle to bottom. The AMAZING thing is that Detroit would completely re-tool and re-design most of the body, interior, and stainless and die-cast, EACH MODEL YEAR!!! Imagine if they tried to do that today!!! It's impossible, due to the high standards and competetive environment in today's industry. We're now so much more engineering-intensive and advanced. There is amazing craftsmanship in the old cars, especially the metal work and the die-cast tooling they used to do. But they don't stand up to a micrometer anything like a new car does.

Re: instrument color on S - aluminum look or black

Verrrry interesting. So the awesome part about that era is behind the scenes in setup for mfgring. wow.

thanks for explaining the restoration vs. original thing. makes me have even more respect for those guys achieve the highest levels.

    nice! I love it!

Re: instrument color on S - aluminum look or black

Keep in mind that the only "restored" interior I posted was the copper '56 Chevy. The green '56 Cadillac only has 14K original miles on it, all 100% original interior. And the metallic red '60 Bonneville, while totally restored, we were able to re-use ALL of the original interior because the lady who was the original owner was absolutely ridiculously meticulous with its care. That's the original dash, carpet, upholstery, EVERYTHING. We just cleaned it, polished the bright-work, and re-assembled. It's absolutely flawless, she didn't even pull or wear a single thread on the carpet (good homemade floor mats protecting the carpets, she lived on a Pennsylvania farm!)
