2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

What a mess. When we are looking forward to the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend, the media focus is all on the race in Bahrain the following weekend, for obvious reasons.

In an ideal world, politics and sport would not be mixed together.

But we don't live in an ideal world. We live in a world with 24/7 news channels showing riots and demonstrations within moments of trouble breaking out on the streets.

While the large Shia majority in Bahrain is fighting for equal rights and democracy against a Sunni ruling family, the TV images will look very bad of people having fun racing and spraying bottles of ward (a non-alcoholic alternative to champagne) on the podium while the ordinary people are protesting, burning tyres and throwing stones at riot police.

And then there is safety. Bahrain is a tiny island state. How will the hundreds of F1 related people (team staff etc) be ferried around the place with demonstrations going on?

The F1 race is really because of the passion of a few members of the ruling royal family and, as I've said previously, IMO the ruling family doesn't care about democracy. They care about hosting a race, advertising their country for tourism and the lavish VIP parties they will have. What little they have done re democracy is purely a fig leaf designed to make it look like they are doing something, enough to ensure the race is not jeopardised.

Common sense should prevail IMO. Bahrain should be removed from the calendar indefinitely until they have found a permanent solution. Indeed, IMO an indefinite cancellation is the best way to make the ruling royal family actually do something meaningful.

My company's management visit Bahrain on weekly basis. No problems whatsoever.

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

Sure, I think the normal level of security/disruption would be fine, as you described.

But obviously, the protestors will escalate their disruption and target it accordingly for the grand prix weekend to draw attention to their cause and to make the atmosphere there as inappropriate as possible.

Both sides are clearly playing a high stakes game ...

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

Apparently, Bernie is leaving it up to the individual teams as to whether they wish to participate - contract or not!

What happens if only a few of them turn up...

Funny! No such preoccupation with China.yes

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

@Spyderidol: I don't think it's the lack of democracy per se that is the issue but the ongoing security aspects due to protests etc (so China is 'fine' in that respect whereas Bahrain isn't).

@John H: FOTA has now pushed the issue back to the FIA to decide upon.

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

@ Easy - Whilst I  can appreciate the argument based on security concerns (although some with first hand experience say there is no such concern), I have seen many argue that this is not just about security but about democracy/freedom/fill in what ever other scheme takes one's fancy at this time . Whilst it may be a commendable act to speak out against hosting the GP in this country at this time, it is certainly not very admirable to succumb to the level of hypocrisy that those who take this position have achieved.

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

And I've just read a tweet that FIA will announce soon that the Bahrain GP gets go-ahead.

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

And more of it on Autosport.com.

It may sound selfish but I really hope it will happen. Can't imagine what would I do without the F1 in 1 month gap between Chinese GP and Barcelona...SmileySmiley

More so when I've got my in-laws for exactly 1 month visit! Smiley

@Spyderidol: let's hope it's a safe race weekend without all the rioting etc.

The teams are meeting to discuss whether to go ahead:

Why is Berni such a $ whore? We already have a desert race - Abu Dhabi.

I hope things go well, but it is as Webber questions quite sketchy to go there with such a large event.

Mercedes AMG 1st & 2nd finish from front row starts wink

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

I doubt it. The track temperatures in Bahrain could be above 45C. The tyres will not last like they did in Shanghai. I am not expecting cars that eat their tyres to fare well in Bahrain. (Mercedes is the obvious example ... unless they have found a way to look after the tyres better ... which is all the more unlikely since Bahrain is just 1 week after Shanghai ... so almost no technical upgrades before then).

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

But we must admit it was very brave of them to pick a two-stop knowing their chassis eats tires. As Nico mentioned, yes the weather worked to their advantage but the track temp was still 24C maybe cooled to 21C later in the race.. I hope Mercedes have perhaps found a solution to their high tire wear. Of course Sakhir will be another question with very high temps. gonna be interesting. Mercedes made it work perfectly and i have faith in Ross to work his magic again. Look at others with a two-stop strategy... they failed horribly. Raikonen from 2nd to 14th.

Does anyone know why are they switching back to Bahrain GP configuration from the Endurance that was used 2 years ago? I find the original  configuration far less challenging, only stop and go sections... This could be a walk in a park for Mercedes GP...

Cause the long layout was tiring, micky-mouse like and too slow. Smiley Good thing they got rid of it. Now they only need to get rid of the whole Bahrain travesty and set up a GP in France instead! Smiley

I think they are going to have difficulties this weekend as in the first two GP's and its going to fall in McLaren's lap this weekend, because while the Mercedes is fast, it struggles with tracks with high track temperatures and its tires, which was not the case in China's GP, but will be very much so in Bahrain.

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

Helmut Marko thinks that the 2012 rule changes were specifically aimed to slow Red Bull down.

IMO this is paranoia. IMO the most that can be said is that the rules apply to everyone equally but that they affect some teams more than others depending upon how well each team was able to exploit the exhaust blown rear diffuser last year in 2011.

    http://www.planetf1.com/news/3213/7682566/-Rule-Changes-Made-To-Weaken-Bulls-

Previous rules changes have affected other teams before with varying degrees of loss of lap time. It's nothing new.

Re: 2012 Bahrain F1 Grand Prix at Sakhir

    Well,

I could imagine that their point of view might lead to that conclusion... indecision

Have somewhat mixed emotions about that, on the one hand the current season has been far more entertaining and diverse in performance and results than most recent years. I am really happy with it.

On the other hand, I keep asking myself if it is really necessary that drivers have to adjust a variety of parameters every lap, from wing angle over DRS to brake distribution. What I kept wondering a few days ago was how cars would look and perform today if the ideas of the last few years would´ve been kept for a longer time, e.g. two or three seasons. Wouldn´t it be interesting, for the sake of the sports as well as technological development, to pursue certain technologies and, as soon as they have been perfected, move to a different technology. I do believe that things as turbocharging or ground effect, on a large scale, has been around far longer than blown diffusers or the F-duct nowadays. And those inventions cannot even be considered "large scale".

Unbelievable that Mercedes misjudged whether Schumi had to go out for another lap in Q1. Such a shame. Schumi has the car to get a podium finish and it's now spoiled his race weekend.

It's amazing (and for me, unexpected) that Mercedes has found a way to manage its tyres despite the desert heat ...

Raikkonen just made the same mistake as Schumi. Thought he was safe and then some quick laps knocked him out in Q2.

Great lap at the end from Vettel. This could be an exciting race with the cars so close together on performance. Hopefully, plenty of overtaking :)
