    Re: New Porsche boxer engines

It will be interesting if the GT3 is the only naturally aspirated motor in the bunch!

What about the weight of the engines? smaller engine = less weight?

Wouldn't the turbo hardware add back any weight difference?

A little, but a 4cyl is much shorter so less weight behind the rear axle (if they put one in 911).

So what's the meaning of ''downsizing'' if they allegedly offer ''larger=than-anything-current'' B-8 5l TT???

    Re: New Porsche boxer engines

Porsche has to meet very strict environmental laws in near future so I don´t think they have many alternatives lined up. I agree on the lacking appeal of a four-cylinder 911 and I do hope Porsche will find a solution to position and market the car in a different way than the old 912 decades ago. I also hope that Porsche will continue to offer a natural-aspirated engine in one of their 911 models and the GT3 is the perfect candidate to stay with this engine configuration.  Basically all current technological solutions that are used to reduce consumption work effectively only at partial load, less so at full load. A car that is primarily driven on a racetrack or flat-out on Sunday mornings will benefit the least from these advancements. Much more so all those cars that are used as daily drivers and driven at a fraction of their potential most of the time. I guess establishing turbocharging on the lesser models can be justified for those.

Furthermore, I do believe that contemporary engines can deliver a far better throttle response even when equipped with turbochargers nowadays. One should not forget that most cars that have received turbocharged engines for better efficiency nowadays come with far smaller engine displacements as well, and all that in comparatively heavy cars. Those 0.9 to 1.6 litre engines that most major manufacturers offer nowadays are 50 to 70 % smaller than the equivalent n/a-engine in displacement. Porsche´s 3.0 litre engine is only 20% smaller than the equivalent n/a-engine and comes with a better power-to-weigh ratio to start with.

So, I personally are very curious about that particular engine. devil

That motor is only slated for the 960 (a model that doesn't currently exist, so can't be down-sized yet)

I do not belive GT3 would ''survive'' if turbo only switch happens...also GT3 was motorsport derivative,so if they go racing turbos it would be logical that GT3 also goes turbo .On the other hand they wouldn't have gone trough the trouble of making new high revving engine just to use it for a couple of years

    Re: New Porsche boxer engines

I've yet to drive any turbo car where there isn't some lag and they have all lacked the sharp throttle response of a N/A engine.  Turbo engines do not fit with my expectations for a sports car.

    Re: New Porsche boxer engines

..then stay tuned to what will be going on in LMP1 and F1 in the next couple of years. I expect to see some (more)advancements filtering down to road going turbo engines as development work happens in the racing programs. There is a strong possibility that turbo's will filter down to GT racing as well, and although these engines will be based on the road going versions, development work here will also have an impact. I suspect that the turbo engine being placed in road going vehicles in a decade's time, will be substantially improved (yet again)...especially if it is coupled with a hybrid system (no lag). Expect to see great developments in the hybrid systems too.

Didn't AP state that they are monitoring the evolution of the situation regarding future regulation to decide whether or not the new GT3 block, as far as racing is concerned, will remain N/A or be adapted for turbocharging? Smiley

    Re: New Porsche boxer engines

    Yes he did.

    Re: New Porsche boxer engines

As long as they call the 4-cilinder the "912".
