Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

Three cups of coffee and a Porsche 997 with adaptive sport seats.  Piece of cake.  Perhaps Porsche would like to use this in a commercial?  Anyone listening?

Dodging the weather was the trick.  I drove out the weekend prior, straight through after working until 5PM.  It snowed 12 inches along I-90 around in NY and Penn on Tuesday and Wednesday and a massive rain storm covered the route the saturday after I arrived in KC.  I lucked out.

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

Very cool, but also hardcore. 20 hours straight driving, I'd definitely take a rest in between somewhere for my own safety.

What were your stats like MPG and ave. speed?

    thanks for posting kiss

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

I will post the GPS info - my mpg was right at 27mpg.  My average was at around 72mph.  Total stoppage time, when the wheels were not turning was around 15 minutes including the border, traffic jam, red lights etc.

Losing my #1 coil after 17 hours in St Louis really hurt my average and slowed my progress.  Thanks to RC and his coil story I kept going with convidence.

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

Safety would suggest a 15min stop every 2 hours. I do not follow that but I do take a 15 min stop about every 3 to 31/2 hours.

15 min in a 20 hour drive  is really not much . How do you cope ?

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

It is fun for me.  I have the ability to not fall asleep.  I never just sit behind some other car and follow either.  I always look for the next car to pass, for police, etc. to keep me busy.  There are a couple of 100MPH plus runs in that video but you can't tell. lol

I NEVER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL! It will kill you at night!

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

IMG_3411.jpgI reset the Max speed a few times - not a good idea to show high speeds on the GPS.  Also the GPS was turned off for about 10 minutes during one food stop and fuel stop so total stopped time is about 22 minutes.

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

That was fascinating to watch ...

I love how the sun goes down and you drive through the night and then the sun comes up ...

    Thanks for sharing your trip!

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

You can also notice how there is no spring yet in Montreal.  No leaves to speak of on the trees and it snowed that day, just hours prior to leaving.  In KC you will notice flowers and trees with leaves.  Spring arrived almost a month ago in KC.

It is like driving from winter to spring in a few hours.  What a great car for a drive like that - there is no equal to the 911 on the road!  I hope all of you go for a long drive this weekend and enjoy!

Porsche - please use my video in an add - I could use a new car...  I would be happy to test the 991 on a long drive!

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

Yeah, it was great to see the weather improve as the drive went on ...

A drive this weekend? Why wait ? :) I watched your video and I was out on the road enjoying a drive within minutes :)

I have owned my 911 for over 5 years now and it still excites my senses ... it's the best car choice I have ever made.

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

Wow, that's quite a haul.  I enjoy a 4 hour drive, but around 8 I'd rather be done with it.  I pulled a 14 hour trip (through the night) straight through once coming home from New York and hated it.  It should have only been 12, but (pre-GPS) I took a wrong turn and drove down the wrong side of Ohio!  Dang, that one sucked.

Had a crying baby in the car with us too.  I was pulling my hair out by the end!

Glad you enjoyed your trip.  The music you put in really added to the effect, with calm, slow repetition.  Nice video.

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

Nice right lane discipline! (As usual)  kiss

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

Thanks Gladstone, knew you would notice this!

Clearly many others don't have a clue in the US.  Makes for a very slow and frustrating drive at times - much more dangerous than it should be when people sit in the left lane for miles going side by side in the middle of nowhere.

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

Cool video kiss Makes me think I should drive my car a bit more...

    Awesome video! kiss

How often do you do these trips? I also belong to that species that luckily doesn´t fall asleep behind the wheel but I wouldn´t want to drive through the entire night on a regular basis. Flights from Kansas to Montreal are not an option?

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

That works out at 2212km angel I thought the Nürburgring @ 700 or so was a long drive... No way i could do that. Impressive!

Nice video! kiss The distance is insane angel I once drove from Sweden to Switzerland in one go, that is 1200km. Was knackered after that. Only half of your trip...

Re: Montreal to KC - timelaps - 20 hours

Thank you all for your comments.  I have made the drive to Montreal at least 30 times.  Flights are available but I only save about 12 hours and cost four times as much.  I LOVE TO DRIVE, flying sucks in the US.  That said I doubt I would do it if I did not have the Porsche.  The PSS9 suspension was the BOMB!  Made the drive very fun.

As a software developer in my real life I enjoy getting out and seeing the country - flying just does not do it for me.

On the way out to Montreal the previous Thursday I left at 5PM AFTER WORKING ALL DAY and drove through the night direct.  I have pics of that but the battery only lasted 3 hours.  On the return trip I hard-wired the GoPro camera for power.

That drive is so routine I hardly check the airpressure in the tires prior to jumping in the car and going.  I do always take a spare tire!  Staying awake is never an issue for me but like marathon running I am certain I have learned, since driving such distances as a teenager, to keep awake.  Mostly I simply look forward to passing the next car, carefully.  One at a time.  I manage bathroom and fuel stops at the same time as best as possible and I am not about to pee in my car, ever.  I do stop at that point.  Heading back for the F1 GP in a few weeks.  Stay tuned.

Living in KC is very central.  I have driven to Chicago, NY, Boston, Philly, Dallas, San Antonio, Miami, Houston, Denver - skiing in the rockies with a 911!

Perhaps this summer I will go for the NY to LA cannonball solo -

Then again I would love to do the 24 hours LeMans in one stint. lol  Porsche are you listening?
