How did 996 options evolve?

Does anybody know how the introductory model 996 evolved optionwise?

IOW, when the second, third and subsequent year 996s were offered what kinds of changes in options/specs did Porsche offer?

The reason I ask is because I'm on the fence about ordering a 997 right now (for a whole bunch or reasons) and am wondering if I do have to wait for the 2006 models what kinds of changes in the options/specs has Porsche offered typically in the past with their 911s?

Stuff like wheels, colors, interiors, etc.

I ordered a '99 996 Cab pre-introduction. Had the slot available, then ordered what I could, then made minor changes just before production, as the car was then rolling.

The following year, the dash material changed from basketball-like plastic, or a more pleasing pleather, and in subsequent years Porsche got rid of much of the black/gray plastic and it became the soft-touch colored plastic we have today.

Litronics were not offered in the first production run, but I got them in the nick of time as they were beginning to offer them just after the August factory shutdown (my car was built in Sept).

Other options showed up the following year in packages, then separately.

On the 997, you may find some glitches fixed in 2nd year production.

porsche's VERY extensive option list has typically been the same throughout the different generations, they gradually begin to offer them on a new model.

expect there to be small tweaks every year, a major facelift after 4-5 years.

2006 probably won't have anything different, mabye more options offered, but i doubt any noticable differents.

small but not quantifiable tweaks happen every year though.

As far as options go, there are some changes that aren't predictable, but for the most part options are consistent. Optional equipment, such as litronics, will become standard over time. However, there are changes that Porsche makes not only between model years, but within model years as they refine the model. Collector cars or sentimental purchases aside, best advice to buyers generally is buy new or the newest pre-owned that one can afford.
