    Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

My 996 used to have an appreciable little "kick" in RPM and performance at around 3300 rpm which I attributed to the Variocam effect,

I don't notice this at all on my 997S.

Is it gone? Should I be noticing it?

Re: Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

    I have a MY05 997S and I get a massive kick after about 5500rpm.

I find unless I'm over 5500rpm acceleration the car is actually pretty slow, after this it's much more like it

Re: Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

My 2005 C2S has a very noticable 'kick' at about 3200RPM.

Don't know about the 'kick', but you definitely have 'Varicam'!

    I don't get it.

I feel the kick around 5500.

Re: Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

I did feel the kick until last week, when I instaled an BMC air filter. Now it is gone ( nearly)
Was it that the kick was actually only a noise kick ?

No - not noise only, though I could hear a slight increase in the engine pitch as the RPM jumped a 100 or so. I distinctly remember that I could perceive a little umph forward, like a nudge, that was simultaneous with the small bump in RPM.

I am not talking about the wonderful surge in performance and engine note that occurs above about 5,500 RPM. ANyone who has felt the "kick" I'm talking about will know what I mean instantly. Otherwise, it's hard to describe.

Then I guess I never had the kick...

Re: Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

How can a "RPM jump" be possible? I thought variocam only changed the timing and stroke of the valves? imo, that should not onfluence the RPM directly, only the performance, and because more power, it might flow to higher RPM's easier... Is this logical thinking?

Well...if you strongly believe enough in it...

Re: Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

There is a kick due to the variocam.. it is very noticable but offten mixed with the normal RPM/torque kicks..
It is not at a specific RPM since it varies by gear shift, throatle position and Sport mode ...

If you wish to find where that is, do not push hard your car, this will make you mix it with the torque.. steady and stable throatle and feel the back seat...
    enjoy...

Yes - this is how I noticed it in my 996 - very slow steady increase in throttle at around 3200 RPM in second or third gear, but when I do the same with the 997S, I don't notice it at all.

    Weird.

Re: Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

kick ...like a forward surge in a turbocharged car when the boost comes on?

Re: Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

yes, kinda. ~3000 there's a kick, then around ~5000 there's another kick. Don't take it beyond 7200 rpms though, else you get another kick from me.

Frankly, I've been so concerned with the break-in procedures and some minor oil consumption that I haven't noticed the Vario-cam kick in. The transition from 3,500 - 5000 rpm seems pretty smooth to me, although I notice better acceleration above 4,200 - 4,400 rpm. I'll pay closer attention and see if I can notice the Vario-cam "kick in."

Not at all. It's very subtle, and hard to describe accurately. If you've never experienced it, chances are you won't know what I'm talking about.

Having said that, it has been noticeable on the 996, and there are numerous threads where concered drivers ask if it's abnormal and then everyone writes back that it's just the Variocam effect.

That's why I'm so puzzled about not being aware of it in my M97 engine. I have actually not been that impressed with the power up to about 5,000 RPM, so when I put 1 and 1 together, I began to wonder if perhaps the Variocam on my engine wasn't working properly: less power in the lower RPM range, and absent Variocam "kick".

I'm not that mechanically inclined, but it sounds good to me!

Re: Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

I had a Gen 3 Integra GS-R that had a pronounced "kick" at 5500 RPM when VTEC kicked in, but in the 997, all I feel is smooth power delivery...

My butt dyno says that VarioCam comes in hard around 5k, but it could be the change in engine sound as much as it's a power "increase".

I'm guessing that the Motronic DME in the 997 has better control over the cam phasing, and maybe the "kick" has been spread out over a wider RPM range? I'm guessing... that's it.

    Cheers,

    -don

Re: Variocam "kick" gone in M97?

    I have the (996) 3.6L with X51 and there is a definite cam kick-over at 3250. And at 5500.
