Flat (front or rear) will not fit in trunk of a 997 car. It will, however, slide past front seat and fit in back seat.

If you drive in outlying areas (non-urban) you might be smarter to get the spare. At least get a jack and wrench and a DIY plug kit. Can of goop can't be trusted.

As I mentioned above, the pride Porsche places on our cars being reliable daily drivers is misplaced since w/o a spare the car is by definition less reliable.

It's a real hard trade-off for me. I like using the P for weekend jaunts to New England and elsewhere; bringing along a spare in the back seat or in the trunk kills a lot of the luggage space we would need.

The 986 is very useful in that regard. Even with the doughnut tire in the front trunk, there is room between the front and back trunks for two weekend-sized duffles and assorted other junk.

Between the windscreen for the 997 cabrio and a spare, you really don't have room for much more than a toothbrush.

You make a very valid point. Get a spare and kill most of your available space. I'm keeping my fingers cross hoping I will not get a flat. To be honest I haven't even given it much thought until it was brought up on the board. I must be on borrowed time as I can't remember the last time I got a flat. Well I take that back, I was on the highway and a metal bar came off a truck and I ran over it blowing out both of my tires on the drivers side. I was driving a Mazda truck at the time. Well no spare would help in that case anyway.....

Here's a photo of the collapsible spare in trunk. Mounted like this there's still "lots" of room if you shove stuff around the spare and into the center of the wheel... .

If you get a flat you get this space back, but lose backseat room. You can also have your passenger cover him/herself with stuff to make up for space taken up by the flat in the back seat. IOW, unless the back seat area of your car is stuffed to the roof liner, the flat and the collapsible spare are comparable in total cubic inch volume they take up.

Definite PITA but don't forget you also have a shot at solving the problem wth a DIY plug (or can of goop).

There's a related article about these low profile tires in the LA Times today.

Apparently quite a few European manufacturers are deleting spares (without consulting with us in the Wild West) to save weight and space. But,--the deletion of the spare and the move to 30-series tires is too much too soon. I suspect deleting a spare would have been acceptable 15 years ago with 16 inch wheels and 50-series tires, but with today's wheels and tiny sticky tires it's an unscheduled delay about to happen,--at ANY time.

When mine comes in within the week I'm on the lookout for a collapseable spare that will also fit over PCCB rotors.

I've had two flats on my 986 in 7 years, both times at night, both times changed myself in about 15-20 minutes after rediscovering the process.

Hope the 997 will have a better record. By 2.

LOL. Sounds like a happy ending in each case.

OTOH, imagine how different your two incidents might have been if you had to rely on a tow truck to get your car to a Porsche dealer (when they're open) and you to a hotel or to your house... . UGH!

To be fair this assumes the can of goo won't fix the leak... .
