    First casulty of winter use

Running my CS2 as a daily driver for the second winter in a row has lead to a first sign of deterioration: salt residue and frequent washing has led to the driver's side window refusing to operate at normal speed. The window will still go down, but much slower that it did before. It is not related to cold weather, as the same persists even after overnighting in a heated garage.
Did anyone have a similar experience? Is it curable by cleaning and WD-40ing, or a new motor is needed?
Can anyone find the correct door disassembly procedure, in case I were to do it myself?

Re: First casulty of winter use

Is it just the driver's side or both windows?

Mine improved dramatically when I had a new battery fitted.

Re: First casulty of winter use

IMO, Do not use WD-40 unless you want a real mess. I think there's some soft absorbant _felt_ anti-rattle components in the window assembly. IF you get oil or grease on them you'll NEVER have clean windows again.

Try wrapping a single layer or microfiber over a wide plastic (or metal if you're careful) paint scraper and shove it between weather strip and glass. Keep sliding it back and forth, changing position of MF until it comes out clean. Use a some water to get the salt out of the weatherstrip.

    I dunno, worth a try... .

This might sound extreme but I try not to operate the windows if they are really dirty; crud just collects in the weatherstrip

Re: First casulty of winter use

It' s on the driver's side only, so it must be salt related.
I am actually surprised that the battery could have an effect, especially when operating the window with the engine running. My battery is three and a half years old, but I run the car daily and use the porsche charger while on vacation. I do not expect the battery to be ready for replacement yet.

Re: First casulty of winter use

Definitely try my suggestion. The amount of friction might surprise both of us. Driver's window gets used more so it gets dirty faster possibly creating friction-related malfunction sooner than passengers side.

BTW, it doesn't take much to kill a battery these days. They (the few producers world wide) seem to be making them with less and less longevity. It just takes one major discharge to shorten lifespan.

It's good that you use the battery maintainer

Re: First casulty of winter use

    Fixed! Here's my procedure:
    - Clean side windows thoroughly inside and outside with household glass cleaner,
    - roll the windows all the way down (they disappear entirely in the doors),
    - wrap a paint scraper into an old t-shirt and run it 10 times or so in the slot where the window normally sits.
Access is good (it gets a bit tight in the middle of the door) and the t-shirt is optimal for picking the residue responsible for the trouble.

I have decided to do it routinely every three months or so in the future.

Thanks for suggesting this simple fix, I was about to take the door apart to get to the motor...

    awesome MMD!

YAY! Glad it worked! BTW, if you haven't "discovered" the microfiber cloth yet you're in for a treat. MF and the drywall screw: two products that change home/car owners' lives.

    woa explain that one?

Re: First casulty of winter use

pawelmontana was using a cotton tee shirt to clean not a MF.

Before drywall screw (I was in HS) you had to use nails for everything. Though they had holding power, regular wood screws required special bits, took longer to do right. Then came the drywall screw and cordless drills: zzzzzzip and you had really strong AND EASY connections between wood and other household materials (for the first time it was easier to screw than it was to nail ).

With MF, I got a true appreciation of _clean_ on a microscopic level. Spectacularly clean streak free window glass. When I washed my first batch of MF I was shocked by the amount of dirt that came out, took _five_ times as long to clean them in a pail by hand. Was hard to comprehend where all that dirt was coming from!

MF and drywall screws both FANTASTIC products for the homefront!!

    I hope that explains it.
