I understand the the "hump" part of the old wings covered engine components, but that doesn't explain the huge wing part of the structure. So, you may have to admit that even some of the older versions had a little "bling" going on. And some of the flared fenders from the past were more than was absolutely necessary from a function standpoint.

MMD, not sure if I could point to anything that is slapped on to a Porsche except maybe the wart! The PCM console has some, er, "provenance" (OK it's been nicked) from the PCM on the Cayenne, but hey, it's functional even if it makes it feel like you're piloting a Boeing rather than a small sports car sometimes.

Actually the only thing that bugs me about build quality is the slightly plasticky fake metallic door handles, which I thought were tacky when I first saw them. I have got used to them now... but if BMW can properly coat these items with chrome or whatever, why can't Porsche which charges about 2x for the equivalent car.?

    You got me going now...

But otherwise the 997 is a beaut - much much better than the 996 IMHO in every way (but I'm not a 996 owner and am therefore a bit biased - so sorry to any 996 owners out there).

Anyway we kinda like you MMD so don't take all the pushback seriously - it's fun to chew the fat with someone as knowledgeable (and with access to an amazing image library) as you, so please forgive the odd dig when you make what might seem to some of us to be unfair comments on the P-cars of today.

Jealous of you getting a Turbo... I think you'll like it, and it's less bling than some of the older models I've seen.
All the best with it anyway...

    Cheers,

    SoS.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

MMD has been brainwashed by the media to hate buttons. But if you take out the fancy radio (PCM) on the 997, the button count is remarkabley similar to the 60's 911 he keeps posting.

I dunno about brainwashed, plus "hate" is completely wrong.

First thing that comes to my brain is a nightmare where Porsche is "focus grouping" and finding out the _average_ buyer wants lots of buttons and guages and computer screens (and wings, and big wheels, etc etc).

Second thing which comes to mind is my latest digital camera has a touch screen and is very well thought out. It has three or four buttons! BMW idrive notwithstanding, CLEARLY, dozens of buttons on a car dash is about to look verrrry antiquated.

So, WTF are all those buttons doing in our cars? Last I counted, even though I have nav, about five (?) of them DO NOT DO ANYTHING!

I have very functional-looking buttons which DO NOT FUNCTION! That's gotta be a new low for Porsche.

Just blabbing, not getting too serious.

Re: 997 Pays Homage [gets back to] To The Original

That's my thing, is that when you step back and look at the interior from a realistic perspective (minus the PCM), the entire layout is wonderful evolution that is extremely faithful to the classics... More-so than any automotive interior in production that I can think of, except maybe the new Mustang.

And the old interiors had poorer fit, and were more spartan not exclusively by design, but also by budget and production capability...

Next thing you know he'll be calling for less power, more wind noise, and skinnier bias-ply tires...

(Yes, we're having a bit of fun at your expense MMD!! But you bring it upon yourself you know...)

Nah..., not a problem. My goal is to understand these cars, the company and how other owners see them (just a hobby of course).

I'm hoping Porsche is at least reading this stuff.
