Porsche 911 S/T: the best of everything

    911 S/T front

► The 911 S/T has the engine of GT3 RS
    ► More lightness than a T
    ► But only 1963 made

You’re looking at the 911 S/T, the purest interpretation of the 911 you can buy from Stuttgart.

Featuring the lightness of the T badge, the power of the GT3 RS’ naturally aspirated boxer, and the gearbox of the ‘standard’ GT3, it’s a 992 crafted purely for driving enjoyment. The only catch? It’s been built to commemorate the 911’s 60th birthday, so just 1963 examples will be made.

    The best of both

The 911 S/T borrows the beating heart of the GT3 RS for one of the highest-revving 911s on the road. The flat-six behind the driver puts out 525PS like the RS, and had a redline of 9000rpm.

Instead of the PDK, here it’s mounted to a short-ratio manual ‘box for far more driving engagement. The transmission itself is also geared towards lightness; Stuttgart engineers have developed a lightweight clutch especially for this model, with 10.5kg shed for improved performance on both the stopwatch and the weighing scales.

    Adding lightness

The front bonnet, roof, front wrings and doors are all made from carbonfibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) to keep weight down, and inside you’ll find a lightweight roll cage, anti-roll bar and shear panel. The battery has been swapped to a more compact lithium-ion unit, while lightweight glass has also replaced the standard panes. The 911 S/T runs on lightweight centre-locking magnesium wheels, but unlike many other models in the range, this 991 doesn’t have clever rear-wheel steering; it’s been removed in the pursuit of further weight savings. There’s also less noise insulation here than the standard card, so you’ll get the full spectrum of the howling flat-six behind you.

The result? The 911 S/T weighs just 1380kg, making it 40kg lighter than the GT3 Touring, and the lightest of the 992s so far. 0-62mph comes in just 3.7 seconds, with a top speed 186mph arriving later – but this car is all about the corners, not the straight. point to point stuff.

    What else is there?

The S/T’s body has been tuned for road-used rather than out and out track performance, and that means it looks relatively restrained compared the GT3 RS, for example. There’s a gurney flap on the extending rear wing, and that’s pretty much it.

The black version shown in our pics looks relatively like a GT3 Touring – save for a special ST badge and tweaked radiator cover – but you can also tick a box for a more obvious Heritage Design package. Shod in Shoreblue Metallic paint, it features a starting number like the previously seen Heritage 911, and also uses the classic Porsche crest that adorned the very first 911.

    How much will it cost?

It’ll cost £231,600, with first deliveries expected later this year.

New Porsche 911 S/T revealed: is this the best modern 911?  E0F26BDD-E91B-4EF4-964B-7C4204B9E420.gif

A car built not for lap times but for 'sheer driving pleasure'... with a 4.0-litre that revs like a sports bike

    Porsche 911 S/T revealed 2023

When Andreas Preuninger - the boss of Porsche’s GT Line cars - gets this enthusiastic, he’s pretty hard to ignore. Not that you’d ever want to.

“Honestly, I can’t wait for you to drive it. I know we’re not supposed to, but just switch it on for a moment and rev it. Now feel the gearshift. Good, eh?”

We’re not supposed to switch the car on because we’re in a studio, but even static, ‘good’ is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Because the manual gearshift is only about two inches long, and the engine revs like a sports bike. The urge to just charge the thing through the doors and out onto the road is … strong. The ergonomics are perfect, and although the standard seats are uncompromising-looking carbon buckets (Sports Seats are a no-cost option), it feels and sounds vaguely and weirdly like a Carrera GT. But this is ‘just’ a 911. Mind you, it might just be the best one yet. Welcome to the Porsche 911 S/T.

Ok, so there are more than a few special edition 911s currently gambolling around in the world, from Dakar to Sport Classic, but the S/T is probably something of a first among equals. Designed by Porsche as a present to itself on the 60th anniversary of the 911 (there’s 1,963 planned in honour of the birth year), the S/T revives a grand old name from 1969 when a 911 S was sprinkled with a touch of motorsport fairy dust to become the S/T - a fearsome competition car that did without the aid of big wings and hefty aero. A kind of beautiful Frankenstein’s monster, the S/T was a competition car, but not prolific. You can identify them via a little supplier quirk; they tended to have Minilite rear wheels because Fuchs didn’t make a rim wide enough to satisfy the engineer’s choice of tyre.

Still, the modern S/T follows the same path, though with much more modern vim. Mounted in the back is the naturally-aspirated, 521bhp 4.0-litre boxer from the GT3 RS coupled to that short-ratio manual (with shorter cogs than a GT3). There are no big wings bar a short Gurney flap on the electric rear spoiler, which itself doesn’t raise quite as high as other 911s.

The rear-wheel steer system is ditched to save weight and complexity, and the bonnet, front wings, ‘cage, rear anti-roll bars and shear panel underneath are all carbonfibre. The wheels are centrelock and magnesium, the glass thinned to shave precious pounds. Even the battery has been on a diet, and now consists of a lightweight race-style lithium-ion unit. Cobble all this together with the slim carbon bucket seats along with weight savings from the powertrain and clutch, and the S/T becomes the lightest production 911. With a kerbweight of 1,380kg, it’s 40kg lighter than a manual GT3 Touring.

But a lightweight clutch and single-mass flywheel (they save nearly 11kg on their own) apparently make the S/T a little more tricky to drive than a standard 911. And it's then you start to realise that this isn’t a car for lap times, but as Porsche puts it ‘a highly puristic sports car dedicated to sheer driving pleasure… on winding country roads’. So a B-road blaster rather than a track refugee, designed for delicacy and feedback rather than pure numbers.

Although, saying that, it’s not slow - 0-62 in 3.7 and 186mph top end is enough. Sound familiar? One of the greatest recent-years 911s has to be the proto-iconic 911 R from 2016, and although Preuninger is keen to point out that the S/T isn’t a follow-up or son-of, there are definite familial resemblances. And that was one hell of a car.

So what we have here is Porsche offering up an antidote to the anaesthetic of the pure speed you get from something like an electric Taycan Turbo S with a car that doesn’t try to compete on the numbers and seduces with experiences. It sounds very much like this might be the best modern Porsche 911 for drivers.

And when asked whether he thinks the S/T might be the ultimate modern Porsche 911, Preuninger’s answer is pretty definitive. “I don’t think it is… I know it is…” And that’s enough for us.

The new Porsche 911 S/T: purist special-edition model marks 60th anniversary of the 911

Porsche 911 S/T with Heritage Design Package and Porsche 911 S/T, 2023, Porsche AG

    02/08/2023

Porsche is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the 911 with a special edition built for maximum driving enjoyment: in a limited run of 1,963 examples, the Porsche 911 S/T offers lightweight design and a purist driving experience. For the first time, the high-revving engine from the 911 GT3 RS delivers its power to the road via a manual gearbox and lightweight clutch.

To mark the special anniversary of the iconic 911 sports car, the engineers in Weissach have designed a highly purist sports car dedicated to sheer driving enjoyment: the 911 S/T. The exclusive anniversary model unites the strengths of the 911 GT3 with Touring Package and the 911 GT3 RS and delivers a unique combination of agility and driving dynamics. It combines the naturally aspirated, 386 kW (525 PS, 911 GT3 RS: Fuel consumption* combined (WLTP) 13.4 l/100 km, CO₂ emissions* combined (WLTP) 305 g/km) 4.0-litre boxer engine from the 911 GT3 RS with a short-ratio manual transmission. This is complemented by a resolutely lightweight construction and a running-gear setup optimised for agility and drivability. The 911 S/T weighs just 1,380 kilograms (DIN kerb weight, incl. all fluids), making it the lightest model of the 992 generation. The optional Heritage Design Package draws inspiration from the racing version of the 911 S from the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The design of the anniversary model incorporated GT and motorsport expertise from Porsche. This is reflected in its particularly nimble and agile handling, which is designed for maximum driving enjoyment on winding country roads. The reduction of rotating mass both in the engine as well as the wheels and brakes ensures particularly dynamic responsiveness. The S/T responds to driver commands instantaneously. Every steering movement, every ounce of pressure on the accelerator or brake is implemented immediately and with pinpoint precision. Unlike the 911 GT3 RS, the focus of the development of the 911 S/T has been not on track use, but rather for journeys on public roads.

Porsche 911 S/T and Porsche 911 S/T with Heritage Design Package

The name marks out the new 911 S/T as the descendant of a particularly performance-focused version of the first 911 generation. From 1969, Porsche offered a special race version of the 911 S. Internally, these vehicles were called 911 ST. Modifications to the chassis, wheels, engine and body significantly improved acceleration, braking, traction and cornering grip. Large spoilers and other aerodynamic aids were not yet used in these models. The new 911 S/T takes up the spirit of the original 911 S (ST) and transfers it to the current model generation of the Porsche 911. The anniversary model combines elements of the 911 GT3 RS with the body of the 911 GT3 with Touring Package and supplements it with lightweight components specially developed for the 911 S/T. The result is a unique driving experience within the 911 GT portfolio.

Lightweight construction from the wings to the clutch

Among other measures, the 911 S/T achieves its particularly agile and direct handling through consistent lightweight design. The front bonnet, roof, front wings and the doors with their striking inlets are made of lightweight carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). The same applies to the roll cage, rear axle anti-roll bar and shear panel (stiffening element on the rear axle). Porsche also fits the anniversary model with magnesium wheels, the PCCB system, a lithium-ion starter battery and lightweight glass, all as standard. With reduced insulation, the omission of rear-axle steering and weight savings in the powertrain, the 911 S/T achieves a DIN kerb weight of just 1,380 kg. This makes the car, optimised for a fast-road setup, a further 40 kg lighter than a manual 911 GT3 Touring.

Porsche engineers developed a new lightweight clutch exclusively for the 911 S/T. In conjunction with a single-mass flywheel, it reduces the weight of the rotating mass by 10.5 kg. This noticeably improves the responsiveness of the naturally aspirated boxer engine, which now builds revs with especially bracing speed and directness. Coupled with a six-speed manual transmission with a shorter gear ratio than on the 911 GT3, the high-revving engine in the 911 S/T delivers even more immediacy in its dynamics. It propels the 911 S/T to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds. It achieves a top speed of 300 km/h. The exhilarating driving experience is heightened by the compelling soundscape of the standard lightweight sports exhaust system. The 911 S/T is the only 911 of the current generation to combine a double-wishbone front-axle design with a multi-link rear axle without rear-axle steering. The dampers and control systems were tuned accordingly.

The aerodynamics of the 911 S/T are also optimised for the public road rather than the racing track. The anniversary model is equipped as standard with a Gurney flap on the extending rear spoiler. Standard equipment also includes 20-inch (front) and 21-inch (rear) lightweight centre-locking magnesium wheels. Ultra-high-performance 255/35 ZR 20 tyres, meanwhile, ensure a high level of mechanical grip at the front of the car. On the rear, the 911 S/T features 315/30 ZR 21 tyres. CFRP full bucket seats come as standard. The four-way-adjustable Sports Seat Plus is available at no extra charge. The instrument cluster and the clock of the Sport Chrono package are finished in a classic green Porsche colour scheme.

    Heritage Design Package

The 911 S/T is offered with an optional exclusive Heritage Design Package. The new exterior colour Shoreblue Metallic and the wheel rim colour Ceramica are exclusively available for this particularly elegant variant. On the doors, a starting number from 0 to 99 as well as a decorative foil can be applied on request. The classic-design Porsche crest from the original 911 that adorns the front, the hub caps, the steering wheel, the headrests and the car key underscores the historic roots of the 911 S/T. The interior also features cloth seat centers in Classic Cognac with black pinstripes, which are another homage to heritage. Two-tone semi-aniline leather trim in Black/Classic Cognac leather with extensive leather surrounds, a roof lining in perforated Dinamica, and other elements from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur round out the package. The Porsche logo and the 911 S/T model designation on the rear of the car are in Gold.

That is actually pretty impressive considering the official DIN kerb weight of the 997.2 GT3 RS was only 1,370 kg (please correct me) before any weight saving options like PCCB or lithium battery.

"In its dynamic debut on camera, the concept, build and performance of the sensational Tuthill Porsche 911K is revealed in this adrenaline-packed new film. This lightweight bespoke sports car uses a vast amount of carbon-fibre to keep weight to a minimum, while a 3.1-litre flat-six engine with a rev limit of 11,000rpm produces around 350bhp, giving it an incredible power-to-weight ratio.

Richard Tuthill has already been quoted as stating that the 911K could be made even lighter with more extreme weight-saving; potentially even below the 800kg mark – so it seems that this new take on what a lightweight Porsche can be has a very exciting future for enthusiasts."
