You can also get heated fully electric seats in the Carrera

    Re: M3 smg v 911 c4 tip

fanch you can get heated/electric seats in the M3 as well....

    Re: M3 smg v 911 c4 tip

yeah I know, but it sounded like the first post was mentionning that only the BMW could get them.
It's a pretty standard option nowadays in that kind of car.
Man! Even my Mitsubishi Shogun has heated electric seats! And my C4C doesn't!!! Haha!

    Re: M3 smg v 911 c4 tip

What i meeant was M3 u get heated seats as standard. Dr Carrera i can see what u mean, 911 did feel a lot more solid.

Heated seats are not standard on the M3. You can either get them with the Cold weather package or as a standalone option.

    Re: M3 smg v 911 c4 tip

    My car: 996TT, 6MT
    My brother's car: 04 M3 SMG
My cousin's car: 04 Challenge Stradale, F1 tranny
    Where: trackday

I've tracked my turbo several times already, both in stock form and with suspension/aero mods. I've had the chance to track my brother's car several times already too, in tandem with the turbo.

    My 2cents:
The SMG, in the fastest setting, is VERY fast. It is very precise. It actually felt faster in shifting than the CS in it's normal setting, which is saying something. However, I couldn't get used to the upshifts, since they were very abrupt, even in the slowest settings. I thought the car overall was pretty balanced; some initial understeer, but it was dialed out with a jab of the throttle. Brakes are not bad either, but standing on the pedal at 120 mph was little scarey. The body would twitch, and you felt as if the back was gonna come around. Honestly, I liked driving it (the M3). And, you know, the interior is still a lot better than my turbo! All the switchware just felt more substantial. the signal stalks on the 996 felt like twigs in comparison!

    the Challenge Stradale:
whoohoo! Actually, I was scared senseless when I was driving, so I was being very gentle driving it. Out of the hole, my 996 definitley had it beat. I think once we get to maybe 50-65 mph, then the edge goes to the CS. And the handling! Very precise, VERY flat, and it felt like it would take A LOT to get it out of shape. The ceramic brakes were awesome too! The interior was, uh, minimal. There's no insulation at all. Just some fabric covering the BARE METAL in the footwell, and CARBON FIBER EVERYWHERE! It was beautiful. Even the side mirrors are molded out of carbon. There are also a lot of ominous buttons glowing, like ASR, RACE, TC....

    Re: M3 smg v 911 c4 tip

According to manufacturer provided figures, the M3's SMG II shifts faster than the F1 system in every Ferrari. 80ms as opposed to 150ms for the Ferrari system.

    teflon,

Actually, once I switched the setting to Race in the CS, the shifts were lightning fast. I would venture to say it's faster than the M...

    Re: M3 smg v 911 c4 tip

    saveur,

That's your opinion. According to *published* manufactuer figures--yes, I mean the ones from Ferrari--the car shifts at 150ms. They publish absolutely no difference in times from the Modena/Spider, CS and Enzo. They claim with each new car that the shifting has been refined and performance improved, but the time has always stayed the same.

    Re: M3 smg v 911 c4 tip

My previous car before purchasing my 997 was an E46 M3 with SMG. It is a fantastic car that both handles and looks great. I have no reservations about the car, when it is was on...it was really on!.....Jaw dropping performance! Unfortunately though, I had a 2002 model (first year of SMG) and my engine suffered 4 dead stops while in motion due to faulty engine coils. It was declared a saftey issue by BMW attorneys 30 mins before arbitration began. But other than the problems, I think that the M3 is an extremely aggressive car with an even deadlier transmission (really does shift gears in less that 80ms).
But in defense of my current vehicle.....what can I say? It's a Porsche! and a FANTASTIC one at that! If you're after performance, I feel that both are (driving wise) involving vehicles but the Porsche at times feels more rewarding. Futhermore, it's a serious car, no matter how many luxuries you put in it, you can always feel the racing history behind it. In my opinion, it's a great feeling to drive what many people call the definitive sports car.
Also, Porsches atleast here in the states tend to hold their resale value much better than M3s, not to mention that they turn more heads!
They're both great cars.......my suggestion: FLIP A COIN!

    Cheers!
    Ray

Do they (BMW) also mention that the fast shift program option drastically increases the rate of wear on the synchronizer rings?
