It's funny how many of us have bought the X5M/X6M! Mike, you won't regret it. It's a great car! We love ours having put on almost 3000km. My only gripe is that they really should have made the throttle more responsive in normal mode. On the M mode, the throttle response is great, but off-gas it is a bit rough.

Btw, for those who don't think X5M owners take their car off road, here is a video of me driving in the water after a recent freak storm that flooded the city. It was kinda cool fun. Sorry for the lousy quality, but I had to drive and take the video and it was taken from my iPhone.
Driving through flooded streets is pretty dangerous. I once did that with an Isuzu Trooper TD, a real off-roader. After exiting the water, I had water in the frontlights. A collegue who followed in the same car made the mistake to reduce the throttle, resulting in the engine to stop in the middle of the flooded portion of the street. Funny enough, he didn't have water in the frontlights but apparently the exhaust sucked in some water and there was serious damage.
To make it short: avoid such driving through flooded streets if you can, it may work out, it may not. I wouldn't do that in my X5 M, I don't want the engine to suddenly stall at 280 kph because some humidity produced a short circuit somewhere.

V12 diesel although a masterpiece is a difficult engine to work with. Audi tried to put it in R8(there was a plan for limited run) but, matching gearbox currently do not exist.
Maybe it will be used in new A8. BUT, it is just maybe...
Since you decided to go for X5M my advice if you still want to get BIG diesel is new VW Touareg V8 TDI. Much, much better engine then old V10 TDI and much better gearbox(new 8speed tip).
P.S.
Regarding Audi... If you want to add Audi to your collection choice is limited to three models:
-R8 V10-only as manual
-new RS5
-S5 Sportback

I don't think I will go for another Touraeg so long as the V10 is still here. It has been working flawlessly, so I'm going to keep it.
The ML has been giving me minor transmission problems, that is why I want to get rid of it. From time to time it gets stuck in a gear and I need to turn the car off for 30 minutes, before it resets and operates like normal. MB can't pick up any errors, so they refuse to replace anything 
Plus I've never liked the interior, they did not do a great job IMO on the ML's from that aspect. Other than that is has been a fantastic car.
I will look at getting the R8 V10 at some point in the future. I'm waiting for that SL/CS (what ever it's going to be called) to come out 
Maybe on the new Q7, the V12 might still be there and it will be a car I can like 100% - at the moment as it is. I think there are still improvements to be made.

Ahh, that is where you are wrong. Look carefully, I am driving on the footpath because it is on higher ground! Off-road it is then.
Okay, another update. BMW let me drive their press car for a couple days. I am thoroughly impressed! Ironically both variations of the Audi and BMW are white 
There is no car in stock with the options or colour I'm mad about, I'm thinking about getting an individual colour. Audi also called back a few days ago - now they want to negotiate... 
Let's see how the next couple days go, this is taking forever to finalise!

The white X5 M looks very nice, I somehow regret I didn't go for a white X5 M but my wife already has that white M3 Cab and she doesn't like the color too much anymore.

i could not be happier with my white cars. 3 of them. gt2 x6m and glk.
it is a very neutral 'colour' that i don't think one would get bored of. especially in our climate it works very well. very easy to maintain as well, as you don't see swirls etc.

I'm busy comtemplating colours at this stage.
Apart from Caron Black, the X5M/X6M standard colors are a bit boring, they are just 'standard'.
The Individual colors are a bit better, I am trying to get my X6M order in Ruby Black, not sure if BMW Canada will let it go through as that option is not suppose to be available in Canada.
