    997 S bugs

French magazine Sport Auto, made a comparo between the 997S and Aston Martin DB9. Both cars had some eletronic flows. During the test, 997 PASM Suspension went to some kind of "safe" mode and the paddle shifts on the DB9 stopped working for few moments Eletronics still has a long way before it gets the reliability mechanical devices have.

Fanch, did you bought the Magazine?

    J.Seven

    Re: 997 S bugs

Yes J. Seven I did and yes you're right, although I really dislike Sport Auto, I don't think they would lie about that.
It's a shame for sure, too much electrnoics in our cars nowadays.
This is something I really like about the DB9 actually, the chassis is purely mechanical!
You can tell Ulrich Bez is behind that car.
The cynicals will say it also saves money, but I like the fact there isn't much interfering between me and the car.
One reason why I would chose the -20 mm sport suspension on a 997 and one reason why I am eagerly awaiting the V8 Vantage with MANUAL gearbox!
Leave electronics damping for comfort GTs like the SL. Actually I always drive our Mercs in ABC sport mode not that I can feel a real difference...

    Re: 997 S bugs

i agree that there might be too much electronics nowadays but i dont think reliability between porsche and aston is comparable.porsche is way superior in this field

    Re: 997 S bugs

Which Aston did you own to state that?
Friend of mine had an early Vanquish and they were a disaster he claims, but the recent ones are much improved and the DB9 is much much better.
To be fair, the DB9 is too new to judge its reliability, and so is the 997.
Do not always believe what the press and opinions polls say.
If I did we wouldn't have two brand new Mercs in our garage but we do and they have been more reliable than the Porsche so far. The latter having had only small defects but still irritating (alarm failure and winscreen wash tank leak).

    Re: 997 S bugs

i owned a vanquish in the first year it went out fanch ,and yes it was a disaster even tough it was the best aston achieved to date.i am not comparing a 997 with a db9 ,i am comparing porsche with aston martin ,and so far aston has never been an example of reliability,on the opposite it never had anything to do with reliability specially before 1998.and i think its of common knowledge that the quality of porsche machines is excellent ,they are unbreakable machines.at least thats my opinion.
btw i also owned an early db7 ,and that was real disaster.
you often see a 1981 911 sc on the streets as a daily drive ,you think its possible with aston?

    Re: 997 S bugs

A couple of years back, Bill Gates in an expo (COMDEX) compared the computer software industry with the auto industry and said:

"if GM would have evolutioned its technology as much as the software industry, we would all drive cars that would cost $25 and would run 1000Km on one liter of gas."

Well, in reply GM's president himself, Mr. Welch, said in a press release:

"If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:"

    1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
    2. Every time they repainted the lines on the road, you would have to buy a new car.
    3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.
    4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn, would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
    5. Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you bought "Car95" or "CarNT." But then you would have to buy more seats.
    6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but would only run on five percent of the roads.
    7. The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single "general car fault" warning light.
    8. New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt.
    9. The airbag system would say "Are you sure?" before going off.
    10. Occasionally for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grab hold of the radio antenna.
    11. GM would require all car buyers to also purchase a deluxe set of Ran McNally Road maps (now a GM subsidiary), even though they would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50% or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.
    12. Every time GM introduced a new model, car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
    13. You'd press the "start" button to shut off the engine."

Unfortunately, the auro industry seems to be mimicking the software industry You can't buy a good car without suffreing electronic glitches, and Porsche is definately no less given by the early 996Carrera, Cayenne, and now 997 issues.

    Re: 997 S bugs

    Very funny Carlos!

    Re: 997 S bugs

You are absolutely right when it comes to history.
But I am talking about now, and it does seem that Aston has made some efforts with the DB9.
So far, electronis glitches which affect all brands including Porsches.
Let's not forget that the early 996s were a disaster but as Carlos points out, it's due to electronics not engineering.
I just want to wait a bit to give Aston a chance, new owner, new CEO, they could be on the right track.
Porsche is extremely reliable, but now depends just as much as other cars on heavy electronics, they do not have that bullet proof feel the air cooled models used to have, mind you they are also much cheaper to build now as well.

They already have this as standard equipment on my neighbor's 2004 Cadillac. I warned him not to buy it.

Having this problem on a new car is disgusting. Apparently GM is fine with it.

    Re: 997 S bugs

    Francoise,
do you have first hand info on the reliability of the DB9?
I'm asking because i'like it very much, and i'm very close to change my 911 turbo cabrio with a new DB9 !
In Italy Aston are very rare, almost no DB9s, so it' s impossible to have any feed back on the reliability.
I' already know that i will miss the reliability, the techical qualities of the Porsche, but the DB9 it's so beautiful and classy....
Now it only depend on how much the AM dealer will pay my 911...and a brand new jet black DB9 is waiting for me!

    Re: 997 S bugs

Anyone have the link to the French article please?

    Re: 997 S bugs

No I don't I'm afraid. I'd say they're doing ok, seen quite a few in London and haven't heard anything bad yet.
But that's the thing when a car is so exclusive, not many experiences to read from...
I love the DB9, it's more a big GT of course, butso beautiful!

This is the first time I heard such a thing about the PASM system. I hope this isn't something we see more often. Porsche actually has a pretty good reputation regarding electronics, never really had such problems on my past Porsches.

    Re: 997 S bugs

me too rc,never had serious electronics problems..i dont think they will have on the 997,since the cayenne is much more sophisticated and going fine..
