Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

Hey everyone - do I have to worry about gettin Charge-o-mat 1 vs. Charge-o-mat 2? Apparently the only difference between the two is LED display and electronic regulation of the charge. Can I charge a 987/997 with either one?

    Thanks.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

No only that one will charge a bit faster. Watch your battery as it can heat up fast and the fluid will start boiling, so trickle charge it.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

I think you're asking for trouble getting a non-Porsche battery maintainer. Just my opinion.

Imagine using a $15, non-OEM power supply for your $2000 laptop. Good luck with that.

At least the Porsche one has the approval of *Porsche* computer/car/electronics experts.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

I disagree, that's just another way for Porsche to make money.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

    MMD,

The charge-o-mat is Porsche genuine Tequipment. There just happens to be two versions. Right now I am in the office, the car is at home charging, plugged into the wall. Edz, is my car going to catch fire? lol

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

I used the charge-o-mat 1 in my CTT for 2 plus years. Only drove it on weekends and never in snow or ice. Never had a battery problem. Have already purchased the fancy new model for my 997SCab if it ever gets here..Without a doubt, you could use either version to charge your P car

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

ajcastaneda: No your car will not catch fire no worries. A bad battery which can not hold the charge once placed under load, will have the fluids boiling in it fast. If overcharged it can blow up. A good battery, empty needs 8 hours plus on trick charge.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

Okay well, when I start my car tonight to go for a drive, I hope there will be no blowing up and that the battery in my P is a good one!

Am I not supposed to leave it plugged into the wall all the time? Right now it looks like a toy in the garage plugged in like that...

Oh, good. I didn't see that yet. Funny "charge-o-mat" sounds like a crummy unit from nowhere; maybe even a chinese-language translation. But apparently it's the translation from German?! LOL I mean would you buy a unit called "Acme's Charge-o-mat?" No, but if it's Porsche's Charge-o-matt."

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

lol Any normal charge-o-mat from the local 99 cents store would definitely ward me off...but put the Porsche logo on there and it's a different story (along with an $80 premium)

I agree totally. Don't use cheap anything on a Porsche. Any problems you've got full comeback if you stick with Porsche. Cheapest price is not always best value long term.

I'm with you. I have a Battery Tender on mine. It hooks up to the battery rather than the cigarette lighter. It sits idle until the battery drops by one volt, then it turns on, charges it up and then turns off again. As long as you don't use a trickle charger that is constantly on you'll be fine.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

The chargeomat 2 is incredibly sensitive - just lifting the door handles (with the car locked) is enough for the charger to react for a few seconds!

That's right. same with my original version P B maintainer. That's why I don't trust anything else. Not trying to be alarmist or snobbist or anything. I'm not sure if you'd call it a trickle charger either. If you read about lead acid batteries it's a rather complicated life they lead as far as stages and levels of recharging chemistry is concerned. Add to that the heavily-electronic-dependent complexity of our cars and I just figure use what P recommends.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

    Two questions please:
1.) How do I tell if the battery minder I got with my new P-car is the older model 1 or the newer 2?
2.) Which outlet in the P-car is it best to plug it into or does it matter?
    Thanks.

    1. I believe the first one only has one LED that turns red when on and also has a large ac adapter that plugs into the wall...the second one has more lights on it, looks sleeker...you can see a picture of it on the Porsche website - under Tequipment/Accessories.

    2. I haven't been told otherwise so I just plug it into the outlet on my P's passenger footwell.

    1.) This is Charge-o-mat 2
2.)The instructions say plug it into the cigarette lighter socket, which is what I do and it works just fine.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

Thanks guys, I see I have the older model.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

Hey guys, how can you really tell the Charge-o-Mat I from the Charge-O-Mat II?
I just ordered one over the internet and the Porsche part number is 955 044 900 15 which is what I also see on the Porsche Tequipment website (USA). The site does not mention the name Charge-O-Mat II at all. This is also the part number found in a 2005 Tequipment brochure that I have and the brochure also says nothing about Charge-O-Mat II.
    However, a 2006 Tequipment brochure that I recently picked-up from a dealer does mention Charge-O-Mat II with a part number of 955 044 900 54.
The crazy thing is that both brochures show the exact same picture (at least, IMO). Is part # 955 044 900 15 the Charge-O Mat I battery maintainer?

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

The unit I have is just called "Charge-o-mat" It's the size of 1/3 of a red brick in size and is black with lots of vent slots; plugs right into wall socket, no 110volt power cord. About us$50-60. PNumber 000 043 202 56 Been around a while. The nice silver slim one pictured above is new.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

You are OK.. I noticed the different part no. in the 05 Tequipment brochure when I ordered the II from my dealer. He had never heard of the part no. in the book. I picked up the charger at the dealer and it is the new II model with a part no of 955 044 900 15.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

In that case, I'll keep it. Thanks a bunch!

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

What is the difference between these two chargers?

    # 955 044 900 15
    # 955 044 900 54

Not sure of the PNs but if you're asking about the diff between teh us$120 and us$60 ones? The us$60 is simple and does the job (no green light to tell you it's done, it's red light simply goes out); perfectly adequate but looks like a 1/3 brick.

Re: Battery Maintainer I vs. Battery Maintainer II

The P Charger II pictured in the 05-06 Tequipment brochure is the part no. ending in 15. Dealer never heard or saw of no. 54. Typo? in brochure. Anyway, I have the box with the Charge-O-Mat II (the fancy one with the lights pictured,) and it is the part no. 955 044 900 15.

They are both Charge-O-Mat II models but are listed in different catalogs.
