Re: PDK or manual
I've been enjoying my goofy A3 with DSG for a few months. Honestly I bought it to help me think about PDK. I suspect for the racetrack, PDK/DSG would be great. But in everyday circumstances I find myself forgetting which gear I'm in, driving somewhat lazily and confused.
I mean, you pull away from a stop...and YOU shift. You pull up to a stop, and the car shifts...well, unless you decide to pay attention for that particular stop, or want some engine braking. You roll toward a speed bump and downshift - but if you do so too late, you actually speed up and hit the bump at greater speed. So I find myself downshifting earlier, feeling engine braking, then braking with the actual brakes. Or you do both at the same time and feel the effects of both, less than a second apart. All of this adds up to a slightly unsettling, unpolished driving experience.
I was in Vancouver BC last weekend with poor directions, goofy traffic lights and patterns. I drove around in automode so I wouldn't have to think about paddles. And, with it's quick shifts, it IS a very nice autobox (except that it tries really hard to drive everywhere in 6th gear). Plus, with a quick flick of the gearshift, it has this crazy Sport Mode, where it insists on keeping high rpms. In one review I read, the authors didn't even use the paddles, once they discovered Sport Mode - they loved the engine shifting so aggressively with every rpm dip.
Basically DSG is 3 transmissions. I find none of them fits my personality, even if it IS fantastic technology.
How PDK differs from DSG will be very interesting. And a Porsche version of Sport Mode on a 997tt would be absolutely stunning when driven in anger....and, probably, with practice, faster in most circumstances then touching the paddles.
