    Paris Dakar 2010

Paris Dakar 2010 is on, official infos as always on  http://www.dakar.com/

It will take place in Argentina and Chile, but with different routes.

Quads and Motorbikes get shorter and different stages than cars and trucks, to prevent accidents. This seems to be an acknowledgment of the fact that the drivers do not stop to help each other as often as they did in the last years.

Anyway, I hope for a good race without serious injuries for anyone, and I'm looking forward to breathtaking images.

    Re: Paris Dakar 2010

Watched the TV coverage from Buenos Aires yesterday. Really looking forward, there are quite a few competitive cars and drivers out there this time, especially Sainz, Al-Attiyah, Peterhansel and Gordon.

    Re: Paris Dakar 2010

Is there a website with daily video-reports of the rally? TV-coverage is poor here in Belgium, to say the least..

    Re: Paris Dakar 2010

    You cannot access Eurosport?

    Re: Paris Dakar 2010

Yes peterhansel and Sainz will have a nice fight. Who will win?

    You cannot access Eurosport?

Not anymore, as the digital television thing is broken, so back to normal cable Smiley

Apparently there's a 30min review everyday on 'La Deux" every night, that'll do!

    Re: Paris Dakar 2010

News reporting spectator fatality already. Draws to mind that last post about rally fans being too close. Great shame.

And on France 3, every evening at 20h00, a brief 10 min report

    Re: Paris Dakar 2010

Carlos Sainz has won this year´s Dakar, only 2.12 min. in front of his teammate Al-Attiyah after 14 stages. That´s quite an impressive victory for these two drivers and their co-pilots, performing quite similiar over the entire rally. Interesting to note that Al-Attiyah gained in the dunes and on sand, Sainz on the more compact and solid stages. Smiley

Not really... the X3 of Peteransell was the quickest car throught. He just had to stop for 2+ hours due to a mechanical problem and thust lost the race.

    Re: Paris Dakar 2010

On a Dakar type of race mechanical strength and reliability count the most. And anyway manufacturers who enter want to demonstrate the  robustness and endurance of their products, rather than outright speed. Peterhansel is a very experienced raid driver on both 2 and 4 wheels and multiple winner but his BMW was not strong enough.

    So well done VW Smiley

It's not where you're going, it's how you get there that counts

    Re: Paris Dakar 2010

In an endurance race, reliability is key.  So well done VW, but look out for BMW next year.

I heard a story of a british biker. On the last day, he saw a group of fans having a barbecue along the road. He stopped and enjoyed an argentinian steak with them. As he sat on his bike to finish the race, he forgot that he left the bike in gear and he destroyed his gearbox. I heard he was laughing and crying at the same time.

Has anyone come across a source to this story?

    Re: Paris Dakar 2010

Heard on this video that a spectator was critically hurt, and airlifted out.  I remember in the early 70's when a partner and I were driving for Bill Stroppe's Team Ford running the Baja 500.   Parnelli Jones was the hotshoe of our team, and blew past us about mile 200.  A half hour later we saw our team helicopter flying back over us toward San Diego, and minutes later we saw a Mexican Federales helicopter heading over us in the opposite direction.  Turns out a spectator was in the race path and was hit head on and killed by Parnelli.  We later saw Parnelli's truck being towed back, with a damaged radiator.  I don't think Parnelli raced off road much after that, if at all.

Rallies and off road racing are no nonsense and dangerous, both for drivers and spectators...
