Weight difference on brake system between Basic and S

Does anyone have any info about the weight difference
of brakes between the basic carrera and the S ???

I m thinking of putting the S brakes on my car and i m trying to find how much unspung weight my car will have if i do that..

    Also any opinions on that?
i think someone has done the exhange with 996 turbo brakes

i m finding the standard carrera's brakes inconsistent and in search to put something more powerfull i m considering the S brake system...

Thanx guys for your help :):!

Re: Weight difference on brake system between Basic and S

How about PCCB. They will safe you some unsprung weight, don't create any dust and would probably perform better.

Re: Weight difference on brake system between Basic and S

tough question, Dilinger. Maybe telephone or email these folks & ask shipping weights...(they'd probably throw each disc & caliper onto a scale for you if they thought there was a chance you might order a set)
    http://www.design911.co.uk/index.htm?Region=US

(PCCB's save about 40 lbs. total unsprung weight for the car but I sense you don't want to invest
    USD $12K and I don't blame you)

Re: Weight difference on brake system between Basic and S

YOU SENSE correct Damian, BUT thanx for the link;)

Re: Weight difference on brake system between Basic and S

The S brakes are significantly heavier and create a good deal more rotational inertia, since the extra weight is at the outside of the diameter (larger diameter than std brakes). Are you driving your car on the track? If not, then you will just make your car slower and worse handling. If you have issues with the current brakes and just drive on the street, you should consider flushing with new fluid and maybe changing to a different type of pads.

On the track, you will gain some additional thermal capacity with the S brakes that may allow longer sessions before fade becomes an issue. Otherwise, you will never fade the std brakes on the road...

Re: Weight difference on brake system between Basic and S

the are not fading, just not good performers

In that case, try to bleed the fluid (or change it entirely). Then, consider new pads if the fluid change doesn't help. Air in the system can cause problems. Just making the brakes bigger won't help this issue, imho...

As long as the standard brakes are strong enough to trigger ABS, then they're as strong as they need to be. Brake feel has more to do with keeping air and moisture out of the system and pad friction properties.

Re: Weight difference on brake system between Basic and S

i changed the fluid.. im just thinking that

bigger brake discs and bigger calipers will do a better job

the S brake system is undoubfully better performer

Only on the track where the thermal reserves of the stanard brakes will be exceeded. Otherwise, your performance will be worse. PCCB is the only alternative that I've heard substantially improves pedal feel, but the price is absurd, imho.

What specifically do the brakes do to cause you criticism? Soft pedal? Poor stopping?

What sort of driving do you do? High Speed highway stuff (over 200kph)? Mountain driving?

Maybe there is a problem in the hydraulic booster circuit?

Re: Weight difference on brake system between Basic and S

I DO drive sporty and drive through various conditions tight corners, high speed driving highways etc

i just have a doubt, from the day i bought my car..

The standard's carrera braking system is not worth so good comments the car could stop faster

You should test-drive a Carrera S and see if it's better...

Don't forget to check part numbers to see if the brake master cylinder size and brake booster assist on the S is the same as the non-S. Unless I'm mistaken, these two factors also affect pedal feel.

That's good point. Changing to a larger master cylinder (and increased boost if desired) is likely to make a larger subjective difference than placing the S calipers & rotors on your car with the std hydraulics...

Re: Weight difference on brake system between Basic and S

If you're going to upgrade the brakes as well, won't your car cost more than a 997S?

I sooooo wish Porsche gave us our first 911 for free, like their fellow hard drug dealers...

You can make the upgrade to PCCB from the standard S red brakes without any upgrade to the master cylinder , probably just the sensors only....dunnno about the standard Carrera black calipers though
