    Porsche's Big Announcement?

Does anyone have any clues as to what Porsche's big announcement might be making in spring? Porsche CEO said that they will be making a big announcement this spring that will surprise everyone! If im not wrong he made this comment after speaking at the motorsports night saying that he and the Porsche family would love to go to Le Mans for another overall victory. Could this be that announcement? Also do not know what to expect because yesterday Porsche motorsport boss said tha there would be no LMP1 car for 2011 but maybe 2012. What do you all think. And can anyone confirm this big announcement that is suppose to happen in the spring.

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

Didn't I make this announcement a couple of weeks ago when I told you guys, that Porsche plans a huge surprise ?

I think I know what this big announcement is going to be but I'm afraid if I tell you, I'd need to kill you.

Just kidding: I have an idea but I can't tell you guys because it could put the source in trouble. As soon as this "rumor" is available from other sources too, I'm pretty sure it is going to surface on the net somewhere.

It may not be what you expect but who knows.

    RC,

can you just say, whether this surprise is more connected with the word "sportiness" or "mass production'?

My guess... 911 GT1 or Carrera GT sucessor...

Could it have anything to do with a rumored hybrid powered GT3RSR for the 24h Nurburgring?

That is what I was thinking too, although I would rather hear that the "big surprise" was a new prototype.

How many of us would love to see a sexy closed top proto? Smiley

I read a couple of days ago (See Here) that someone high at PAG emphatically denied that hybrid technology would be used in 911s. They have a 911 electric development program though, which I think it is just folly.

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

I'm hoping that they don't go in that direction either, but after reading what Hartmut Kristen had to say when asked about the 2011 rules: "We are still sure that Diesel powered cars have an advantage over Gasoline powered cars.  What will become interesting in the future are opportunities with alternative or hybrid powertrains.” I'm not convinced that there isn't some fire behind the smoke.

It would not surprise me if Porsche developed a one off experimental Hybrid RSR and raced it in the 24H of Nurburgring as a trial for their possible 2012 Hybrid Prototype project.

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

Oh and I almost forgot: Hartmut Kristen will not comment on the possible entry of a hybrid version at the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring.  We’ll have to be patient.

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

Maybe they will race the Lohner-Porsche?

I thought I already heard somewhere that the Hybrid version is intended to compete at the 24 hours, additionally to the RS car with Röhrl and v. Saurma at the wheel. Smiley

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

Yes, at first  a story broke that indeed a Hybrid RSR was going to enter the 24H(N). Then someone at Porsche said that they would not make or sell any hybrid 911's ( a very different thing to making a one-off racing RSR hybrid version). Finally there was an interview with Hartmut Kristen in which he made it clear that Porsche was very interested in Hybrid or alternative technology ( for a possible LMP1program) and would not comment on the possible hybrid entry for the 24h(N).

Now, its possible that this is all hype and will come to naught, but I wouldn't be surprised if they did in fact enter with an experimental hybrid RSR, as this technology needs to be tested under racing conditions before Porsche embarks on a full blown LMP project.

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

The rumor persists that there will be a Carrera RS or something, based on ALMS Spyder RS, but street legal.

    You wanna bet?  Smiley

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

"...Carrera RS or something, based on ALMS Spyder RS,"

It will have to be quite loosely based, as the RS Spyder was a full fledged LMP2 racing vehicle. Perhaps just the use of a de-tuned V8

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

Is it a new Carrera GT with a Lamborghini V12 engine?!

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

What about the carrera gt replacement being a modern version of the 917k with air cooled flat 12, it was not long ago that it celebrated 40yrs.

    Re: Porsche's Big Announcement?

new lightweight cayman. The Cayman GT3. based on much the same principles as the new lightweight boxster speedster. It was a success for Porsche so they see a market for the very potent cayman chassis. Also under VW control Porsche can make more units of "hardcore" models, as such it should be!! pretty much 99% sure this will be it

indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine..  I happen to like both :)
