    The Skyline is dead, long live the GT-R

    If it's based on the 350Z with AWD, then it's going to be tooooo heavy. A RWD Z is already 3,300-3,400 lbs. Add AWD and more luxury and it will be quite a piggy.

    Good point.
    More than two years is a lot of time to tweak it. I just don't see the 350Z as a good starting point for a serious sportscar.

    Agreed, and if it gets AWD it will gain even more weight. Let's hope it starts training now.

    My 350Z, with no weight reduction done to it, weighs less than 3200 pounds. Any way you cut the cake it should be pretty easy for Nissan to oust a 911 Turbo, which weighs more than 3600 pounds...bear in mind they have an AWD system and AWD development history just as thrilling as Porsche.

    I would also remind a lot of you guys that the 350Z is a serious contender in the sports car world -- it has been reviewed by many magazines as faster on a road course than a 911, and is raced in many grand-am type race series by many teams. It is run in JGTC500, one of the most intense forms of Japanese racing. Many of the race cars are modified for class obviously, but chassis and other components come from the 350Z. It is no Porsche in terms of roadcar refinement (look at the price), but it is a well made car by the numbers and was designed very competently.

    I drive one daily, which (although modified) is easily capable of trouncing a 911 on the road or track and is not turbocharged.

    I don't consider the 996TT anything less than overbloated. I don't doubt that Nissan could match or slightly undercut that figure. For me, I wouldn't be interested in any "sporty" car that weighs well over 3,000 lbs.

    BTW, Nissan on their official website, lists the 350Z at 3,370 lbs (Track model with manual trans.)

    It depends on the model.



    If your concern is weight, you can buy a model without the "overbloating". They all perform the same, and the extra options # is way better spent in the aftermarket with these cars.

    I will make a gentleman's bet with you on the weight of the new GTR being lower than a 996 Turbo, if it would amuse you

    Lowest weight I see on the website for 2006 models is 3,339 lbs:

    That's my whole point - if it even comes close to weighing as much as a 996 Turbo, I'd have zero interest. The 996TT is WAY too heavy for me...

    Ah! Well, for what it's worth I think the car will have to weigh less than 3500 pounds -- the weight of the R33 and R34 GTR (V) were both around 3400 pounds. I am not sure what the newer R34 Nur- and Z-Spec cars weigh.

    I had the opportunity to drive a 350Z 300hp version for a week and from time to time (own by a relative). The 350Z is heavy, plain and simple and you feel the car's weight when driving hard . The steering was numb. It is now where close to road/steering feel of a Porsche and doesn't handle as well. It just didn't have the confident feeling a Porsche gives you. Reviewed by many magazines in trouncing the 911??? Are you serious? I saw one, and I think that article was a fluke. A 350Z couldn't keep up with a Boxster S on the track, at least have a hard time (in stock form) let alone a 911 (with more power). Take a look at the article that Road and Track did for best sports car. The Z put up bad numbers, it was at the BOTTOM (maybe last) of the list on the track times and those (professional and amateur drivers) who tested the car didn't have anything good to say. I think you are doing some wishful thinking with the Z. It is a decent sport car for the money (actually the S2000 is a better car for the money), but in stock form trouncing a 911 is a big stretch of optimism.

    Say what you will -- it is your opinion, as what I say is my opinion. Family cars for me include two 911 Turbos and the Z, among others. I am not speaking from a lack of experience. While I guess it isn't a totally fair comparison seeing as my Z has work done to it, it is a much easier car to feel out through turns. It is faster than a 911 (996) C2 or C2S as it was tested against by some magazines on a road course. I'm sure it is probably not as fast in a straight line or on a big horsepower track. It is faster than the Boxster S we had for several years on a local track where I have many laps on both cars -- mostly because it makes more torque, much earlier, and that is extremely helpful coming out of turns. As for your criticisms of the Z, the car's weight is much less noticeable than the weight of the 996 or 996 Turbo. The seating position and high doorsills induce the feeling you are talking about. The steering is not "numb", it's just a lot stiffer/heavier...although I will agree I like the feeling of the steering wheel feedback, particularly in the Boxster S, much better than the stock Z.

    I do think the 911 (996 series) cars have their merits, but road course is not one of them. The 911 has become an overburdened luxury sports car. I appreciate it for what it is and the quality/ingenuity of design that Porsche exudes. I love taking the 996 Turbo on the highway and punching it -- the power is unbelievable. However...when I come up on turns (and that's the part I enjoy) I know what I'd rather be driving!

    That having been said, (and back on topic) the head of Nissan (ghosn) has said several times that their performance target is the 911 Turbo. I'm very curious to know whether this is the 996 or 997 Turbo, and I think we will all have a much better idea in just a few days (judging by the gtrproto.com website) of what kind of competition this will provide on the track.

    air intake, intake manifold, headers, cat pipes (resonated pipes in place of cats), exhaust, clutch, flywheel, suspension, wheels (more rubber), solid mounts for the motor, some brake upgrades...I know I am forgetting some stuff, but that is all I can think of off the top of my head.

    That is the performance stuff. There is a decent amount done visually as well (body aerokit, aftermarket seats, etc).
