    First Oil Change

When do you recommend doing the first oil change? I was planning on 5000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.

    Re: First Oil Change

Some folks like to do a first change very early to remove any small metal particles which are created when a new motor is first run. However, others feel you should wait the full 15k miles or 1 year (whichever comes first). I'm in the early camp myself (1k miles or so).

    Re: First Oil Change

What about doing it at the end of the 2,000 mi. breakin period?

    Re: First Oil Change

Changed mine at 3,300 miles just for piece of mind. Kinda wish I'd done it at 2000 -- a little more piece of mind. Won't change it again until I see 10,000 on the odometer or 365 days on the calendar.

    Re: First Oil Change

Modern engines can take up to 10k miles to bed in - i changed mine at this figure, or what was 11 months. I found nothing untoward in the oil after filtering the drained oil.

one year or 10k is fine IMO

Your method may indeed be preferable. However, you will only find evidence of metal filings if you cut open the oil filter - that's where it would be found...

    Re: First Oil Change

I too was interested in just being able to see the color of the oil. I have 5,200 miles on my P-car and have only had to add 500 ml since new (just under 10 months old). I was also concerned how accurate the electronic gage is, as from various posts on this board, 500ml for 5,000 miles seemed low.

I decided to change the oil and did it myself. I could not believe how easy it was. I did not have to jack up the car to have access to the drain plug and the oil filter. I was able to reach these areas with ease, along with be able to clean them as required. I was also able to inspect the oil filter housing and engine block portion.

The oil was actually slightly clearer than I expected it to be at this mileage, and found no signs of any metal, and also used a magnet to sweep the plastic oil collector pan, and found nothing there.

The quantity of the oil drained with filter was correct. I refilled the oil crankcase witholding 1 quart, to check the oil gage prior to completion of the required amount. I also pre-filled the filter housing, to reduce the time until the oil pressure was restored.

I still plan to bring the car to the dealer for it's annual look-see under the chassis, but will really be changing the oil myself from now on. The total cost was $73, paying list price for filter, crush ring, and 8 qts. oil. I already had the correct 8mm hex wrench and porsche sized filter wrench.

    Re: First Oil Change

    Changed @ 900 miles.

i quite agree - the week before i did mine i saw a us cayman owners pictures of his oil change with some metal debris after filtering the drained oil - hard to believe they got past the filter element as this is pretty dense in construction.

8 quarts with filter or more? Book says 8.7 with filter for non-S and 9.0 with filter for S.

    Re: First Oil Change

    Changed at 6k, what a RUSH!! ;-)

I changed at 5000, and plan to change every year (or at required intervals) thereafter...

Sounds easy - but my dealer charges 140 for the same service - and I don't have to have any worries, mess or disposal issues.

    Re: First Oil Change

Oops...and add 0.5 qts. from the first opened container.....for a total refill of 8.5 qts. Oil gage reads "exactly" at the full mark.

They get $240 for the oil change "special" in this area.

Ouch....I understand why you insource this service...

    Re: First Oil Change

    Hello devo,

Changing so early at 900 miles is not a good idea.....in general. Manufacturers often do NOT tell anyone if the oil used is special in any way.
Acura, for example, did not tell anyone, including the service managers, that the oil in the TL's engines WAS special, for about 2 years---so any extra diligence at 'safe early changes' would have been a problem. I almost got into roublein that case---
