    Re: 997 GT3 Nordschleife Crash

Bad luck, this is why I do not really like the Nordschleife. Once there is liquid (oil, coolant?) on the surface, you're doomed, no matter how good you drive (GT3 driver looked quite skilled to me...). Unless of course there was a driver error involved but I am pretty sure something was on that surface and the GT3 driver was driving (almost) at the limit.

To me it looks like the GT3 touched the dirt and grass strip next to the track with the right rear wheel under braking, sending the car into a spin...

    Re: 997 GT3 Nordschleife Crash

It was reported that an old BMW was heavily spilling coolant minutes ahead.

But that can happen on any track. Or highway.

The Nordschleife allows incredible speeds and many people are driving at or close to the limit.

Normal tracks are usually different, also (depending on track management and maintenance) they are usually better monitored because it is easier than on the Nordschleife.

Also, last but not least, I would never drive at the limit on a public road, simply because sh.t happens. Smiley

Agree about the risk, but if that's a reason to skip the world's greatest track I strongly disagree. You can limit the risk by participating in trackdays instead of touristenfahrten, for example.

This is what I actually always recommend to people who want to drive on the Nordschleife. Smiley There are some real professionals who know the Nordschleife very very well, also the risks with liquids and other stuff and you can also learn a lot from them without risking to crash your car.

    Re: 997 GT3 Nordschleife Crash

Having just experienced a very professional instructional program (Scuderia S7) and a Tourist day on this trip, I would agree that the Tourist day seemed much riskier (though there were damaged cars at both).

i think the only damage at S7 (unfortunately to a Ferrari F12, among others) came during the "Final Exam" where students drive 2 laps themselves with a goal of consistency.  I chose not to participate in that part (was already exhausted and satisfied) and seemed a bit riskier than the earlier lead/follow exercises. While the stated goal of the exam is consistency, it's natural to push a bit when the times are published.
