    Lightweight flywheel and new clutch

For the money is a lightweight flywheel worth it. I will get it installed for free(need new RMS and dealer will do it free) or is the money better spent on coil overs. What performance gains can I expect. Any comments would be helpful.

Re: Lightweight flywheel and new clutch

The CGT has a light flywheel and clutch which is ceramic. This basically means instantaneous throttle response and the engine is very responsive and will rip to the redline in a scant. Getting a light flywheel will give your engine a bit more responsiveness? No?

Performance wise, maybe a very slight increase in acceleration? But definitely some enhanced throttle response.

Suspension don't know much about, but somebody may recommend something...watch this space.

<Love the sound of an NA Porsche BTW.>

Re: Lightweight flywheel and new clutch

i have both (lighter/strong clutch and lighter flywheel), and can tell you it makes the engine rev much faster.

    Nice car Fred!
    I like your license plate!

    Fred V:

You can expect quicker throttle response, and much quicker acceleration in low gears. You won't notice a difference in higher gear acceleration, or a change in top speed.

On the negative side, your car will not idle smoothly because the flywheel doesn't have the same mass/momentum to run the pistons up on their compression stroke as easily as before. A solution to this is a higher lift cam to keep the valves open longer in the cycle. You will also notice that your engine will slow down a lot quicker when you are off the gas.

If you do a lot of drag/short track/auto cross racing then I think it's a good modification. But if you do a lot of slow moving travel / daily driving - it may get annoying. Prehaps the coilovers are a better mod for you? If so, I'd go with a H&R or Bilstein product.

I think you meant a longer duration cam but they usually go hand in hand for performance cams, longer duration and higher lift.

Also, there is probably not many 911 drivers doing any drag racing but a lightweight clutch is not always the way to go for that type of racing. It really depends on the particular motor. On those that are very peaky with little or no low end torque, you can sometimes benefit from a high mass flywheel. Revving to a high rpm before leaving the line builds up momentum in the flywheel. When you dump the clutch you can release that energy and help a low torque motor make a decent start.
