Is 315/25/19 too big for rear?

Hi everyone,

I'm running Michelin PS2 stock tires (235 front and 295 rear) right now in my 997S. Just bought a set of 19" Black Techart formula (8.5" front and 11" rear). I'm entertaining the thoughts of trying something other than PS2, and something less expensive. I've narrowed down to 2 choices:

1. Bridgestone RE050A at 235/35/19 and 305/30/19 at US $1026 per set, or

2. Toyo Proxes T1R at 235/35/19 and 315/25/19 (as not available in 295 or 305) at US $890 per set

Any inputs on pluses or minuses in going 305 or 315 is welcome. THANKS.

The 315 should fit on a 10.5" to 11.5" rim. Doubt you would have any wheel clearance issues but let us all know if it rubs. That is one monster tyre.

Hi Leawood,

I've already checked and know it will fit on the 11" wheel.

Someone on Rennlist is using the exact Toyo set on his narrowed body 996 with 19" lobster wheels with no clearance problem.

My question is whether it is bad to go against the Porsche's recommendation of 235 Front and 295 Rear, or it there any advantages or disadvantages going 305 or 315 at the back. Thanks.

in the UK going against OEM recommended tyre sizes can invalidate your insurance if you have an accident, don't know if insurance companies are as bad in Canada though

It will fit just fine my friend just had it done. In all honesty the 305 looks almost the same but the 315 looks wider only if you have the two cars parked next 2 each other.

Is think 295 is plenty of traction already for the C2S...
Plus I do not recall this size being recommended by Porsche...

Keep in mind that the 315 will affect your gas mileage and increase the road noise.

I read somewhere in the development of the 997 a few years ago that 345's overpowered the suspension in testing, and caused some damage. It may have been in an 04 issue of Panorama.

I wouldnt go for such a size as

1.It may not rub on the straight line or when you gently turn but if you fall on a bumpy road you might damage suspensions, anti rolls or the body work itself..

2. You may encounter problems with the insurance company

3. You will lose in comfort and noise AND not to mention the fact that the reactions of the car will be much more agressive on the edge. You will surely get a better grip but when you lose it......oups!!!!

4. On wet and snow(

) the car will sometimes be very aquaplanning friendly if you see what I mean....

Thanks Florent. Very good points. I probably should stay with 295 as that's what the Porsche's engineers pick.

By the way - I love your island. I used to go there every year as a kid for summer. Miss it terribly, not much driving room for a 911 though.

Thanks Florent. Very good points. I probably should stay with 295 as that's what the Porsche's engineers pick.

#1 reason to avoid them is that the 911 already has enormous grip on the rear wheels (by virtue of the engine weight being right over them) and a natural tendancy to understeer as a result. Wider rears will not add much (if anything really) and probably worsen the understeer.
