Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

    Fellow Rennteamers,

I've been going back and forth trying to decide which wheel to order on my March C4S coupe build. Besides asthetics, my goal is to try and get the wheel to come out as close to the rear wheel arch as possible so it doesn't look lost in the 4's wide a** body. I created this table which may be useful for people going through the same decision. I ended up switching my order from the Carrera S wheel w/ spacers to the XRR wheel w/o.

ORDFBUP = Outer Rim Distance From Bolt Up Face (the larger the # the closer to the wheel arch, the smaller the number the more inset the wheel is)

    Wheel Name / Option Code / R Width / R Offset / ORDFBUP

    19" Carrera S / 403 / 11" / 51mm / 191mm
    19" Carrera Classic / 405 / 11" / 51mm / 191mm
    19" Sport Design / 407 / 11" / 67mm / 207mm
    19" Carrera Sport / XRR / 11.5" / 67mm / 213mm

    Tom,

This is an excellent chart! Thank you. This confirms my thoughts from my post of Friday. I have Classics on my April build but I'm ready to switch to XRR's, as they really fill out the wheelwells. Appreciate your efforts.

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

    Thank you for the Information....

when i have read it right....so is the "sport Design" wheel also a good choose... because it is only a little bit away from the XRR`s ( 207 to 213 )....

    is it rigtht...?

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

    @tlsmithx

Perhaps you can help me - have you the same infos for the front wheels.....

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

    Prätorianer,

Exactly. The Sport Design is only 6mm inset of the XRR.

Not a difference you would be really able to tell visually but the nice thing is that you could alway put a 5mm spacer in there if you wanted!

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

Prätorianer, I'm working getting the info on the fronts. I'll post it as soon as I get it!

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

Thanks Jerry! What are you ordering?

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

    @tlsmithx

Thank you, now it es clear for me, why 997 looks a littel more powerfull on the street ( sorry i don not know a better word) with the "sport design" against the "carrera classic"

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

If I go with the XRR rims on a regular C2S I wonder if they'll stick out too much? (I also have the 5mm spacers on order,--perhaps that can be deleted?)

    Dan

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

I don't think the 5mm spacers are allowed as an option with the Carrera Sport Wheels.

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

Correct, no spacers (5mm or 17mm) are allowed w/ XRR's (as they really aren't needed).

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

Thanks. My dealer just confirmed that as well (a savings $$ !) I can now better understand WHY Porsche even offers the 5mm spacer,--to bump out the Carrera S, Classic and even the Sport Design rims out to be closer to the dimensions of the XRR rim.

Fortunately, my dealer was able to amend my order and get the XRR rims.

I'm guessing that the XRR rim will become more popular over time as more buyers discover the 1/2 inch advantage front and rear. Without a picture of them in any catalogs or any dimensions listed by PAG, it was difficult to decode the entire wheel business. Oh! What happened to the days when it was Fuchs or no Fuchs!

Very nice setup! Please do post pictures of your car when it arrives, especially with the rare color.

A few things bother me, though.

Delete Model Designation and Painted Model Designation are obviously incompatible.

Second, do you really think you'll need a hard top in Santa Barbara? I bet it'd just waste room in your garage!

As for the remote CD changer: up to you, but now that the PCM can read MP3 discs, I wouldn't bother. Especially since you'll have to remove the CD changer if you ever have satellite radio installed.

You might want leather sun visors, they are a must on a cabriolet IMHO. I'd throw in leather door finishers as well (nice and very affordable option), or maybe get the missing Makassar pieces (large dashboard package and door package).

    Options: it's a never-ending game!

Re: Distance of 19" Wheel's Outer Rim From Bolt Up Face

The offset for the Sport Design wheel for the 4S is in fact 51 mm and the XRR comes with a required 17mm spacer as per factory documentation. The larger the offset, the more inboard the wheel is. This is why the offset for the 4S is smaller than the narrow body S.

The delete model designation and painted model options have to go together. I agree that it sounds weird. Ultimately it simply gets the "Carrera S" in the body color,--less obtrusive.

The hardtop won't be an issue,--I have tons of room. (Actually, a buddy is giving me his hardtop hoist,--they switched to the SL500). I feel that it will give me two cars at times!

I am considering having the sunvisors done later,--$500 something for leather visors seems insane. (I have a bunch of elk and deer skins laying around here). I had to FINALLY STOP on the options!! It's is TRULY insane. The CD player will work for me,--I like CDs. I don't anticipate really wanting satellite radio in this car. I have a 5 mile commute to work so the d@$ thing won't even get up to operating temps if I drive it to work!
