    Flat Tire Nightmare

My daughter flew in from New Haven for a med school interview today. So I decided to take the best car in our stable to get her to her first of two interviews scheduled today. The first interview was in San Marino. As I was waiting outside, I noticed that the passenger front tire was flat. Her next interview was in 30 minutes at the main USC med school campus. I get out the compressor and it fails after 1 minute of use! Then I call Porsche roadside service, and the wait will be over an hour! So I call AAA roadside service and they send a tow truck in 15 minutes! So they take the car to Rusnak Porsche in Pasadena and they do not have the tire in stock (Contis). So the car will spend the weekend at the dealer till Monday. It took over 4 hours to get home. All this within 5 miles of my house in the Porsche capital of the world. Hate to imagine what would have happened if I was on the road somewhere. (My daughter did make the interview with a ride from her mother).

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

Wow one would think the service would be better then that.

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

Compressor fail or did the fuse blow....reason I ask is I had a flat and plugged the thing into the *wrong* power outlet in the car?

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

It took me almost a week to get a tyre changed on a 996 Turbo in Istanbul and that was with one tyre even being in stock with Pirelli in Istanbul.

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

LOL... I hate to laugh about this situation but I remember all the threads about not having a spare placed inside the vehicle...

...truly sorry for your misery because I too have called Porsche roadside assistance ONCE... never again here in LA.

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

sounds like we should all be purchasing spare tires of our own, eh?

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

Gotta use the "Lighter Outlet" only with the compressor

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

Don't mean to sound stupid but is that the one by the hand brake?
Also, which outlet should one plug the battery minder in to?
    Thanks.

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

Exactly, who was it that was posting that they haven't had a flat in 20 years? Idiotic to not have a spare in a modern day car. I guess if all else fails, a can of fix a flat would work?

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

So how does one fit one of these large, damaged tires into a P/F, even if these cars were equipped w/spares????

And don't a lot of guys get killed/injured each yr while attempting to repair/replace a flat alongside fwys/major roads, when some typically sloppy driver chatting on their phone smashes into the disabled car in their way/alongside the road??

It's a car....unfortunate stuff periodically happens to every car (incl Lexus/Toyota).....can't carry spare engines/software code/fuel pumps, etc w/you.....sure, it's always more risky to leave affluent parts of major metro regions....but we all place our own bets that make sense to us on a risk/reward basis.....

I dunno--why wouldn't the plastic bag and putting the wheel in the back work, as it did for the 996's? The 19's are bigger, yes, but not that much bigger. I would prefer a spare and the jack and tools that go with it--unfortunately the way the front trunk is in the 997 won't leave you much room left, if you put one in there.

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

Some countries mandate a reak spare tire. Porsche can supply you with a space saver spare for the 997.

Make sure you also order the jack, and a correct fitting lug wrench.

In the back seat nicely rapt in a large towel. In KSA all cars must be sold with a spare tire by law! as such, my 997S came with one and I have a towel in the ront trunck just in case i need it.

Use common sence. Find a safe place and change the tire.

If the car is serviced properly and according to the manufacturer, it should never faile you mechanicaly. Tires is a different story, you always run the risk of having a flat tire. Between 2000 and 2004 I never had a flat tire but this year I had 5 flat tires due to nails, I guess its not my lucky year.

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

    Pretty poor service

I'd rather lose the 20 litres of stowage space up front and have the temporary spare of the last generation - the foam and compressor is fine for small punctures, but for anything more than a pinprick its useless.

Not sure i think much os the spare wheel factory option either..

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

I think every car should have a spare tire. I travell a lot, and I also had many flat tires. So I really don't want stuck somewhere on the autobahn in the middle of the night.

The future is Runflat Tires. I don't understand why porsche didn't use this for the 997. In this class it should be standard. This is for sure the safest solution, since have a flat tire while driving is one of the most dangorous things.

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

I bought the spare tire and would like to keep it in the front trunk space. any ideas on the best way to secure the tire. On my 996, I had four flat tires over the years and don't expect better with the 997S.

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

keep plugs in the car to fix large puntures that the Porsche gooo will not work on ..

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

Very messed up. Sorry you got stuck. 15 minutes could have been all it cost you. Insted the whole day is blown.

Your experience is a statistic Porsche can live with so they save money and get to adverytise less weight.

    Emergency Wheel/Tire P/N 996-362-020-02 fits 997S
    Scissors Jack P/N 996-721-211-00
Tire Boot (Bag for flat tire) P/N 996-361-521-00
    lug wrench fro Griot's garage

Very sorry to hear about the angst your daughter suffered on a very important day for her.

LOL! That is funny lookin. Giving a spare limo service.

Should paint a dress on it and attach a head. LOL!!

Imagine having to deal with giving your spare a ride 24/7 for a couple of years only to get 2 flats.

    AMEN !

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

Some of the stuff I'm putting in my 997 S just in case.

Upper row, left to right: kitchen sack, stoves, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pads, roll-up table, sleeping bag.

Lower row: clothes 1, clothes 2, welding kit, long tool box, ratchets/sockets sack, pliers/screwdrivers bag, wrench bag.

For me, it depends on the car. For my SPORTS CAR that I want to go as fast as possible in, a spare tire is extra weight (I know, not much extra), but I notice a weight and acceleration/handling difference when a passenger sits next to me in my TT. For the family sedan (in my case, also my winter car), a spare tire is definitely important, since I'm driving also with precious human cargo. I suppose the spare for the 911 (whether turbo or not) would be nice if a trip were planned, but then the car would only handle three comfortably-the driver, one frontseat passenger, and one small rearseat passenger. So taking all of this into consideration, my 996TSCab gets no spare.

Hmmmmm! Do I detect just a trace bit of sarcasm here?! And I thought I was sarcastic.

    Isn't that why there's AAA?

Strad, you forgot another important item-a spare 3.8L normally aspirated M97 engine, in case the stock engine grenades as you try to keep up with your buddies' M430's and Ford GT's.

\Hmmmmmmm. Good point. Maybe I can hire someone to follow us around in a chaser vehicle like a van with a spare 3.8L normally aspirated M97 engine ???

I really hate to be in the position of defending PAG, but, do you have any proof that the decision was made in the pursuit of profits? Couldn't it have possibly been made because the market doesn't want a spare wheel in a sports car such as the Carrera? I haven't read of any mass riots outside of Porsche corporate headquarters. And I don't see many people following your example and installing a spare. Shouldn't that tell you something?

I agree with others here who have said that it depends on the vehicle and its intended purpose. A Landrover somewhere in Africa probably needs a spare. A Porsche in Beverly Hills? Come on...

I spent us$1000 on a spare and jack. Niiiice profit.

I believe most guys, when told there's no spare, think, "Oh cr*p, darn it, oh well the car weighs less, who needs a spare anyway? Just call Porsche roadside service (AAA)." They accept it and try to see something positive in it. Very few think about getting stuck in the middle of nowhere, with only SATELLITE phone coverage, or missing an important meeting because the car "breaks down" for the day. I don't think anybody is GLAD the car is sold without a spare. Why? Because if a guy wants to go to the track, or needs the extra room he can remove the spare himself and leave it in the garage. On long trips, thru deserted areas, he can throw it back in the car. The car, sold without a spare, is a less reliable car. I dunno what their motives are but I think the net result is MUCH better for Porsche than it is for the buyer who gets a flat.

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

It will be interesting to see what trends develop with future models. Presumably drivers who find themselves stranded without a spare will not buy another Porsche. Instead they will go with the competition.

I heard they are terribly heavy and expensive. Cost and performance deficits make it unlikely?

    Re: Flat Tire Nightmare

The complete aribag system is also not made out of carbon. ;-) Its also quite heavy, but in my opinion saftey must come first.
But you're right, they are quit expensive, and we all know porsche is sometimes to much profit oriented. They will wait a few more years, when it get much cheaper, and than they will use it.
If someone is going to use his porsche for often track driving, so I would anyway recommend an extra set of light rims with semy slik tires, and they can be without runflat system.
    This is my opinion.
I guess one of the most dangarous things today is a flat tire while diriven on the autobahn at higher speed.

Its a good one Stradale :! but you can't deny the fact that the chances of having a flat tire are far greater than a blown engine.
