Yes, looking forward to this too. But... is there any functionally relevant difference between the Spyder and the GTS other than the 3.8l engine and manual gearbox? So, it will be a bit faster than the GTS thanks to the extra power, but a bit slower due to the manual gearbox (I would actaully love to see a GTS PDK versus GTS manual test to see the exact benefit of PDK).

If it is not intended as a track car I would get the Spyder over the GT4 any day. Unless you live in alaska the open top beats all irrelevant performance numbers on the road. On the track, well all these comparisons are no difference than the GT3 versus Carrera comparisons. A Carrera with power kit and driving goodies is not far off a GT3 on the track, but it will never feel like a GT3.

Agree, except I think you may be surprised how much the Spyder would feel like the GT4 due to having the same steering, gear box, engine and exhaust system! All my GT3s feel different from my Carreras of past because they have very heavy clutch, clunky gearbox, direct steering, and of course the firmer ride and more solid pedal feel through the brakes too. I think the Spyder will feel the same as the GT3 in most of those areas with the exception of maybe the brakes (I'm just guessing obviously as I've driven neither of these cars) so the comparison is no longer like a GT3 vs a Carrera.

    Re: Cayman GT4

One other difference is that the Spyder has a fixed suspension rather than PASM and is supposed to be very well tuned.

OK, not a GTS, but here is a 981 Cayman Manual -v- 981 Cayman PDK from Fifth Gear about a year ago. They perform a straight sprint and a flying lap on a track. Jason Plato in the manual and Marcus Grönholm in the PDK. Smiley

Yes and no... much of that difference in feel between the GT3 and the Carrera comes from the completely different suspension parts and aggressive setup. It is the reason the steering feels so direct in the GT3, it is the reason you feel every little bump in the road, it affects the entire handling (and feeling) of the car.

The biggest difference, and more or less only Motorsport part on the GT4, is the suspension. The Spyder does not have this, it has the regular non-PASM -20mm suspension and hence I believe it behaves and feels more like a powerful GTS. The directness in the chassis, steering and gearbox will never be the same (not saying it is bad in any way, it will simply not feel like the GT4, for much the same reason a Carrera will not feel like a GT3). The open roof is for me a much more important feature of the Spyder. It beats all other feelings Smiley

I just had a look at the new issue of AB Sportscars (featuring a Boxster GTS vs. AUDI TTS comparo). The PDK equipped GTS went from 0-200 in 16,7 sec., the Spyder reviews I have seen so far showed high 13,x sec to low 14,x sec. Smiley I guess the big difference of the Spyder compared to the other Boxster variants is that now for the first time this superb chassis is mated with an engine powerful enough to allow for steering with the gas pedal (due to the smaller and less sticky tires compared to the GT4) - should be fun on a winding B-road or alpine passroad Smiley

Hah, it sounds like you have experience from such bad thoughts PJ indecision

I am trying to settle my mind on a more "practical" solution like a Boxster S/GTS with -20mm and PDK. There are a few for sale in Switzerland at pretty good prices, especially when you compare to 991 cabriolet prices.

    Because...

    • I miss having a cabriolet
    • It must work every day all year round
    • The 981 offers more value for money than the 991
    • The 981 has a brilliant chassis

The Spyder should also have much better residual value that most other 981/991...

with the odd looking truncated version of the classic side decal due to the deep side scoop of the 981s, I would balance it visually by simply leaving  off the small section ahead  of the wheel opening if it were my car

the front clip would look cleaner , more aggressive too

    Haha,

That 964 pic reminds me of so many great 964 memories in our S cab -  traveling from Malibu to Top of the World Montana with Surf and Sandy -2 Labs and 2 people shoehorned in; mud up to the windows deep into the dirt backroads going to ranches way back in to stay and hike!  Running  145 mph across Utah and New Mexico and being buzzed by F 15's who waved their wings at us!!  So much fun in that car.

Sun expects to have as much fun in the GT4, December arrival, but we thank Bluelines for keeping the GT4 flame until thenSmiley

    Re: Cayman GT4

Took delivery of my Gt4 yesterday.  I plan to daily drive it.  So far, much more livable in terms of noise and NVH that I was expecting, but the tires should get louder over time.  Maybe it's because I drove my track prepped Elise to work the last few days prior.  Definitely not a BMW or something when it comes to daily driving credentials but seems fine for me.  Incidentally, my BMW is for sale   :)

Cant wait to compare it dynamically but my Lotus after break in.
