    Replacing the stereo head unit

Has anyone replaced the non-PCM stereo/cd player headunit with an aftermarket unit? Is it possible? If so, which brand is compatible with the CD changer? Thanks...AK

Re: Replacing the stereo head unit

I haven't heard of one that works with the fiber-optic system in the Cayenne.

Re: Replacing the stereo head unit

I think I would agree with Stephen AK. With the MOST bus, I doubt you will find any aftermarket devices to swap out for the factory unit. Here is a link you can look at on MOST technology: Vector web page.

Here's another link to Oasis SiliconSystems who was actually involved in developing the Porsche system. I think they supply the chipset. Oasis web page
They are located here in Austin.

I do think things are going to become available for this system eventually. The technology is just too new right now.

Re: Replacing the stereo head unit

    Thanks...

Re: Replacing the stereo head unit

Does the changer have M-bus capability?

Re: Replacing the stereo head unit

Yes, everything on the system is, and must be, on the MOST bus. Here is a Rennteam thread that discusses the MOST system: link to thread.

For those of us in the US, we can ignore the telephone capabilities mentioned in this article.

You may want to double check this, but I think, Alpine might have a couple models that may work. If the Porsche cd-changer has the M-bus connection, then Alpine models with M-bus capabilities may work. Check out Alpine's web page and look at the head units...CDM-9823, CDM-9821, and CDM-9803.

    "MOST bus technology
Audio and communications data is exchanged between the CDC-4 CD changer, PCM, and Bose Cabin Surround System using a new digital bus technology called Media Orientated System Transport, or MOST for short. This important innovation uses high-speed fiber optics to transfer audio, navigation and CD changer data between system components with total integrity and minimal exposure to interference.

The MOST bus system is particularly effective when it comes to enhancing audio ouput. Amplifiers, and CD changers are digitally linked for a much higher quality of sound reproduction, and a more engaging audio experience."

Sorry, I think I have misled. I don't think the Alpine Versatile-Link M-Bus is the same as the MOST bus. You can read even more about MOST technology at the MOST Cooperation web page. Alpine is a member of the group but I don't believe they have product yet. The MOST symbol is trademarked so if a company were to introduce product with MOST capabilities, they would be required to use the full acronym.

BTW, nice graphic AK! I had not seen that before.

It is Dave Gahan I was wondering if anyone here would know that. Your Alice in Chains (Layne Staley) inspired me to put up DG

Re: Replacing the stereo head unit

Remember the white Cayenne S from Porsche Puebla, its got a head unit exchange, added a sub and used the factory speakers (no BOSE), so its possible, how it was done... well I have to find out as it was done by the Sony Moble Shop down the street from us... I'll keep you posted and bring some pics

This sounds great Frissen. Give us all the details. I am very interested in how an aftermarket head unit was added to this system. I'm also anxious to see photos of this installation and to find out what the sound is like.

Re: Replacing the stereo head unit

Yeah Frissen....please post a picture if you could...thanks for keeping hope alive (on my 3rd Porsche head unit in the Cay).....AK
