OK, it is official now...the M5 tested in Sport Auto had 671 hp... angel I just hope the customers get the same power.

In the case of the tested E63 S estate (651 hp), there are reported customer cars with up to 690 hp, so let's hope that BMW didn't "prepare" this car only for the press.

They typically don’t. There were reports of 340i cars hitting 330 hp at the wheels, which would put the engine at around 380. Officially the car has 330 hp, so maybe they report the wheel hp, not the crank hp. Smiley

BMW (but unfortunately also AMG) has a history of "preparing" test cars for car tests. Smiley

Porsche seems to be more clever, they seem to have had some sort of dyno detection software (some car magazines suspected this) but right now, I think none of the manufacturers would dare to use such a software (again). For various well known reasons. Smiley

Well, once my E63 S is broken in, I can do a fun comparison with Conny on the Autobahn. Smiley Or I put my and his car on a dyno, could be fun as well.

Shmee is collecting "his" M5 with Munich factory plates.

Reminds me a little bit of his 991.2 GT3 he collected...with Frankfurt plates.

Something smells fishy here, he is probably getting paid for this or he got those special lease deals for "VIP journalists".

Unfortunately this can take a while...stupid 3000 km (first 1500 km very strict, 4500 rpm and not faster than 140 kph Smiley and afterwards rising slowly speed and rev figure). After that 3000 km, I have to get the rear axle differential oil exchanged and then I'm good to go.

According to an AMG engineer in the AMG Owners Lounge, the break-in period for the E63 is very very important, the engine is highly break-in sensitive (power-wise) and furthermore, the rear axle differential can overheat and be damaged (it runs on a different oil during break-i

Same here. Break in very strict up to 2.000 km, than oil change differential and engine, after that you can increase revs and speed "slowly" up to 5.000 km. Finally than you have the complete break in procedure finished.Smiley

    3000-5000 km...ouch.

How many kilometers have you already put on your car?

I plan a trip to Italy (lake Garda) forth and back (with a short overnight stay), this already makes 1000 km. With some luck, I am going to be able to put another 500 km until I make this trip, so when I get back to Germany, at least I will have 1500 km, so I can drive a little bit faster little by little.

The sales guy, who is specially trained for M-vehicles and has all the internal information of the M-GmbH, told me that all M5 have at least between 660 hp and 680 hp. I asked him why this isn't officially named. He replied that this isn't done for political reasons so as not to wake sleeping dogs. 600 hp are anyway too much for some people, but they don't want to provoke further. This may be also the explanation for the Nürburgring times.

It's not his for good, he has the car for some months, it is coming from the "M fleet" already having some miles on it.

Re: 2018 BMW M5(G30) Thread Closed

Yeah that seems to be right. Later on in his video one can see the car has already more than 3.000 km on the odo.

One difference is the sound system: “his” car has Harman Kardon, my M5 is equipped  with the sound package “Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound”. Btw. this sounds really good and with the integrated equalizer you can manage your individual settings.

Shmee admitted it now...press fleet car, doesn't cost him a dime, not even that VIP lease many YouTubers and others profit from. Seems to be part of a promotion deal with BMW, he mentioned it in a video, so more stuff to come regarding the M5, including (maybe?) a production video, which could be interesting.

This is exactly what I do not like about Shmee's videos: The video quality is excellent, the descriptions as well but his "reviews" are boring as hell because there is never ever anything negative about a car, which is impossible. Probably the reason why he actually gets these testcars and has a good relationship to manufacturers, they want puppets, not people who criticize their products. Smiley I know I may sound a bit harsh but it p.ss.s me off when a reviewer doesn't seem to find anything negative about a product. These are usually the reviews I do not trust at all.

Neither do I, German cars in this performance category are awfully close to each other in performance, which cannot be a coincidence. Think of Shmee as the social media arm of BMW, Mercedes, Ford, etc. They use him to reach a younger audience, like a branding exercise, that's why you'll never ever see a bad comment about any product he reviews because he is speaking on behalf the company.

He was a pioneer using these new channels to generate automotive content but people is getting more and more bored with his videos, you only have to take a look to his views and see how they've been decreasing MoM. Yes, he tried to improve the quality of his videos using different perspectives, more editing (copying Jon Olsson's vbloggin style, though in a cheap version), but there is people out there doing a much better job and generating much more engagement.

It's a matter of time companies realize that they're wasting money (or not investing it as efficient as they could) and (partially) cut him off from their PR budgets.

Indeed but this is not what I am looking for and my kids got fed up with him as well, they prefer Vehicle Virgins for example over Shmee but even Parker isn't really that honest in his "reviews". It seems that YouTubers can only be successful if they actually do not criticize anything. Smiley

Video/sound quality are excellent but everything else is just boring. I usually watch his videos to see the details on the cars, I would actually prefer if he wouldn't talk that much. Smiley

It's a matter of time companies realize that they're wasting money (or not investing it as efficient as they could) and (partially) cut him off from their PR budgets.

Car manufacturers are dumb, honestly. Yes, YouTubers reach a certain amount of people with their videos but let's be honest here: How many M5 buyers/potential customers are going to Shmee's YouTube channel to make a buying decision? Smiley To be even more blunt: I've seen Chris Harris and his E63 S AMG video and I was asking myself who makes a buying decision based on Chris Harris drifting in a sedan on a track? Me? Certainly not.

Many of the viewers of those "car" channels (Shmee150, Virgin Vehicles, etc.) are kids, adolescents and whatnot. Those adults who watch this stuff do not base their buying decision on these videos and those kids don't have the money to get such cars. So whats the point? Smiley

I get that social media hype but I do not see how this "engagement" helps car manufacturers with selling products. Especially when the very same people drive a BMW today, a Mercedes tomorrow, an Audi the day after tomorrow and so on. Smiley There is no credibility in this, especially since all products seem to be equally good, right? Smiley

First of, it's a branding action, you don't neccessary need to directly measure the impact of this actions but within an attribution model. In the short term you (as a company) are paying for exposure and brand awareness.

Then, their viewers might not buy an M5, true, but they will be aware of and consider certain brands when it comes to buy a new car (them or their parents).

That's basically what engagement is all about: paid and organic visibility to be always in the top of mind of your potential clients.

I don't like Shmee's style. As I said his (or his crew) editing skills seems cheap to me and a try-hard effort to meet new viewers and youtube's algorithms standards. I applaud the way he is making a living though, is just it's not for me.

Despite Chris Harris and so, one "youtuber" I'm liking more and more is Mat Watson from carwow. Repetitive at times but entertaining to see and with pros and cons of each car he reviews.

I agree but then, wouldn't it be "better" to offer Shmee the new M2 Performance and not the M5? I get that whole brand awareness and exposure thing but this can backfire. Badly. I doubt that Conny997 identifies himself with Shmee... Smiley

Then, their viewers might not buy an M5, true, but they will be aware of and consider certain brands when it comes to buy a new car (them or their parents).

True but Shmee reviews a BMW now, a Mercedes tomorrow and a Porsche the day after tomorrow. Difficult to be "aware" of anything. Smiley

That's basically what engagement is all about: paid and organic visibility to be always in the top of mind of your potential clients.

I agree but in my opinion, it is worthless. Much better ways to achieve better results with the same demographic.

His style is boring. He may be a nice guy in private life (from what I heard) but he is not someone people would associate with the words "sportscars" and "cool". My son and his friends don't like him and they are exactly the demographic these YouTube videos seem to work on. Not sure he really is making his living (well, maybe his living only but definitely not the cars he bought) with his videos, especially since I heard that his parents are loaded (repeated history here, see Parker Nierstein from Vehicle Virgins).

Despite Chris Harris and so, one "youtuber" I'm liking more and more is Mat Watson from carwow. Repetitive at times but entertaining to see and with pros and cons of each car he reviews.

Yes, Mat Watson is a very nice guy, agreed. Still not what I want from a capable and honest reviewer but the closest we probably can get for now. Honest reviewers don't get cars, I understood this pretty early. Smiley Smiley

Don't get me wrong, I love Chris Harris for his showmanship but as a reviewer, I think he lacks (probably not his fault...).

I really tried to give them a chance and some videos were/are interesting (Vehicle Virgins for example much more than Shmee150) but either they are boring or too focused on a (much) younger target group (kids/adolescents).

I actually prefer now videos which are basically only people driving a certain car around and reporting their experience with it, positive and negative (you won't hear many negative stuff though, for whatever reason).

Those good old "old school" reviews? Apparently not happening anymore. Smiley

The Sport Auto videos are basically only showing the car driving for 7-8 minutes on the Nordschleife. I get it, they want me to buy their magazine but the magazine content is also quite "cautious" and more focused on what they like than what they don't. It seems it has become "politically incorrect" to point out the negative points of a product. Smiley Smiley
