    DaveGordon:

How expensive can it be to make an alternative gearset?  You'd think it would be a fairly standard thing to do for a gearbox manufacturer.  Feels more like they don't want to give it one because it would upset the apple cart and take 911 sales.

Yeah, that is the only reason. Porsche with all its brilliant engineers can not come up with a new gear set, but they managed to come up with the 918, the Taycan, the GT2/3 RS, and numerous super advanced race cars. Nope, a few cogs in a gearbox and they are lost Smiley

New Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS excels during final testing...  E0F26BDD-E91B-4EF4-964B-7C4204B9E420.gif

    (20 October 2021)

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 is getting a big brother: the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. The new top model of the 718 family is well prepared for its world premiere in November. During final testing and evaluation drives, the first 718 to carry the RS badge has impressively demonstrated its dynamic potential both on twisty mountain roads and on the racetrack.

Brand ambassador and development driver Jörg Bergmeister has lapped the 20.832-kilometre Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit in a lightly disguised production car in 7:09.300 minutes. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS completed the shorter 20.6 km lap, which had previously served as the benchmark, in 7:04.511 minutes – 23.6 seconds faster than its little brother, the 718 Cayman GT4.

To protect the driver, the mid-engined sports car was equipped with a racing seat. The tyres fitted to the car were Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R, which will be optionally available. A notary confirmed the standard condition and weight of the car.

"During development, we gave the 718 Cayman GT4 RS everything that characterises a genuine RS: lightweight construction, more downforce, more power and, of course, an even higher level of responsiveness and feedback to driver inputs. The fantastic lap time of the Nordschleife is impressive proof of how clearly noticeable these improvements in driving dynamics are," says Directors GT Model Line, Andreas Preuninger. "Our customers can look forward to a pure driver's car that makes a thrilling driving experience an absolute priority."

"The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is an uncompromising driving machine. It feels as nimble as a go-kart on mountain roads, yet is impressively stable and well-balanced on the racetrack. Otherwise, such a lap time wouldn’t even be possible," says Jörg Bergmeister. "The GT4 RS is one of the sharpest cars Porsche has ever developed. And you really have had to experience the breathtaking noise it makes for yourself," adds the world-class driver, who has devoted more than 500 hours to the 718 Cayman GT4 RS during test and tuning drives as part of the car’s development.

They are still not saying, but it does go to 9k rpm and top speed at the Ring looked about 285kph (must be very close to 500hp and seems likely to share GT3 engine)...

It is, but remember that 992 GT3 is 17 seconds faster than 991.2 GT3 with only 10hp additional (big part of improvement for both cars is the Cup R tires and the GT4 benefits from Much more than 10hp additional and Far better gearing now with new PDK version).

Attention Watt:  notice the shift points on the video - Way lower gearing than any GT4 before (and lower than GT3 as well).

Remember than PDK will shift on the performance peak of the engine which is below 9krpm...but manually you will go to 9krpm. Smiley

    Re: GT4RS

Outside of an OBD read out, no one is sure of what their cars' rev is. Tach is just a general mark. If a car is idling at '800 rpm' per the tach, the actual readout will not be at 800 sharp, at least +-50rpm if not more.

    The plot thickens.

Entirely possible.  I also think it's possible that the 992 GT3 has more left to improve as well (I think they broke 7 min on the 2nd or 3rd run and stopped there - didn't look to be on ragged edge in video).

I think it's fairly obvious that Porsche has specific lap time targets in mind for all their models - they shoot at the targets (presumably set by Marketing), not all-out best time possible.

I think they wanted to break 7 minutes in the 992 GT3 and they wanted about a 10 second gap to the GT4 RS.

If the 992 GT3 had broken 7 minutes by a larger margin, it would simply make their upcoming GT3 RS lap less impressive.  Though I assume it will be Much faster than GT3 or previous RS.

When they break out their secret weapon, Kevin Estre, that's how you know they're really trying hard Smiley
