    F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

I'm sorry if this has been posted or an old video. I just found this & thought it was AMAZING for a car 20 years old. The F40 is insanely fast!!!!

    Re: F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

The F40 is one of the best cars ever built. It looks good and performs great.

    Re: F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

Still my favorite Ferrari, Thanks for the clip Testarossa86.

I wonder if Ferrari will go with the twin-turbo route for their next enzo/F70 project.

Will have direct injection, magnetic suspension, even faster gearchanges and hopefully
    the "lightweight construction".

Since the F40 their supercars have bocome heavier.
    F40 was 1100kg, F50 1230kg with the Enzo being a "hefty" 1365kg.

I do not believe it will have 900hp though.

    Re: F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

The F40 is surprising fast. One individual who owns an F40 and CGT posted elsewhere that from a rolling start both cars were very close in acceleration and depending on what speed the acceleration began each one would top the other.

Considering that the F40 has 480hp it is a considerable achievement. That said, a year or two ago a magazine compared the F40 with the 430 and determined that the 430 was faster around a track. The F40 has no safety stability devices. That impeded any effort for the F40 to make better times around a track.

    Re: F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

Yep, F40=classic, no doubt about it!

    Re: F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

As Tiff Needell once said "The F40 still has the definitive supercar shape" or something like that.

    And I love it.

    What a waste of time!

    Re: F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

There was a segment on Top Gear 2 years ago, where Jeremy did a head to head w/supercars of Today (Enzo, CGT, Zonda) vs. those of the 90's (F40, Mcl F1, Jag X220) and the ones from the 90's WERE FASTER and better!

However the cars of today are 100% more reliable and safer ...

    Re: F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

Have Ferrari made any car as light as the F40 since it was released??

    Re: F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

^^^ To my knowledge, not any roadgoing car, no. As a matter fact due to increasing world wide safety mandated equipment and demand for greater creature amenities, each successive F has gotten a litte heavier.

The real problem is the ever increasing size. Take a look at the F360, which is bigger in every direction compared to its predecessor: though equipped with new light weight technology as space frame body made out of aluminium, this car weighs as much as the F355.

If companies built smaller cars, which doesn't mean cramped inside, just as big as the cars of the nineties like F355 or 993 for example, with today's technology cars would be considerably lighter.

    Re: F40 DESTROYS A Murcielago

Crumple zones, pedestrian friendly bumpers, passive safety devices such as airbags, brake pretensioners, power windows, ipod hookups, phone hookups, leather everything, side impact regulations, rollover concerns, sound requirements, ecological concerns, all add up to new cars having to meet and exceed both government and market demands that old cars never had to... hence a lot heavier and bigger.

True. And I don't like it.

Rossi, I agree and disagree at the same time.

    (1) Some of the size increases have to do with packaging and crumple zone constraints. Sometimes designers need the extra space and material to absorb and displace energy.

    (2) Create comfort, the fact that we as humans are getting larger. Average height for a man 40 years ago was 5'8" - now we're at 5'10". Your typical Ferrari owner now is a 40 year old+ so you know they're going to be in excess of 200lbs (especially for fat assed Americans ) Get into your average Ferrari from say the 60'-80's and it's damn near clastrophobic

    (3) The increase in size sometimes have to due with handling characteristic and roadholding due to the increase in H.P. So the designers need to take this into account and grow the car some. They try to mitigate the size inc. with advanced lightweight materials.

But to your point, park a F355 (which I still love) next to a F430, and 355 looks like a clown car in comparitive size.
