Re: BMW will officially unveil the 2012 BMW M5 this Friday

    I hate these teasers...

The 1M teasers were annoying too but apparently BMW does it allover again with the M5 this time.

Soon we will see a half camouflaged car and...

    I hate it.

RC you are 100% correct. I say if you are going to show it then show it, otherwise its a waste of our time. I understand that they do it to build up a hype but we probably wont see the final product for at least another 3-4 months

if the new M5 cannot match the Panamera turbo in performance, then they don't even need to announce it.

Sub 4 sec 0-60? No I don't think so. M5 will not be as fast as the Panamera Turbo.

Re: BMW will officially unveil the 2012 BMW M5 this Friday

4.2 will be amazing figure for the new M5. Nonetheless, im worried about that V8 TT setup.

I already miss that V10 of the past. One guy in town runs it with straight pipes.. it's just stupid! (awesome)

I wouldnt mind the V8 as I know that the torque is much better. The evolution shows, that 2 cylinder less are more efficient. Unfortunately the sound is a bit worse, but come on a V8 sounds great anyway!

This is supposed to be a sportscar. Low down torque is for trucks. Smiley

A sedan can be a sports car? I would never drive a M5 on the race track, I would feel ridiculous. The M5 is a sports sedan, not a sports car. This doesn't mean the M5 is something bad, on the contrary, it will be a fascinating product...just not a sports car.

I did not say a track day tool RC, I said a sports car (not in the sense of a 911 of course); a sports saloon if you like.

...and GTR, as a next even more economical 4-seater...Smiley

IMHO this car has lost it's position in a universe 8years ago with the new stupid corporate direction for more luxury, than sport, useless "no usable low torque/hi rev hp only" oriented trany/v10engine   implementation approach. It's really useless in a real city living/driving and etc... I guess, BMW AG executives don't drive M5s in the cities, but only on the long extremely straight, lonely highways... Smiley

...in that 4-seater segment M3 is the only decent car left and the last car,  least affected by dumb corporate BMW AG  experimentation.

What's not to like about low-end torque? Don't you like exploding out of corners and rocketing down the straight to the next turn?

Or did you prefer waiting forever for the revs to build up to where the power is half way down the straight then have to break again for the next turn while other cars zoom by you at high speed?

Current M5 has been timed at 4.1, so I don't think sub 4 is a big stretch. And now with twin turbos it will have more torque too.

Re: BMW will officially unveil the 2012 BMW M5 this Friday

As far as I heard, BMW tried to use the Panamera Turbo as a benchmark, similar to the X5/X6 M and the Cayenne Turbo (the X5/X6 M was supposed to be faster than the top model Cayenne, the Turbo S, at that time and it was). So the new BMW M5 should be slightly faster than the Panamera Turbo but I suppose the Panamera Turbo S will beat the M5 again. Circle of life...

    Expect about 4.3 sec 0 - 100 km/h.. and about 560 hp, 680 - 700 Nm, new LSD, 7-speed DCT

Re: BMW will officially unveil the 2012 BMW M5 this Friday

Latest rumor(from a second grade source though): 580 hp and automatic tranny(DCT will be released later).

7 speed DCT(there is even a pic of it)

    560ps/680Nm

Good question. The more reliable source indicated "over" 2 tons. Surprise, surprise...I guess. Smiley

7-speed DCT will be in M5 from beginning.

All latest prototypes already got DCT gearbox..

Re: BMW will officially unveil the 2012 BMW M5 this Friday

    nice bi-color.

Autobild had a ride in the latest prototype:

It's just a simple matter of engine architecture, all high revving NA engine has the same deficit, they don't make much power lower in the rev range, they are all tuned to deliver power higher in the rev range, most if not all of the great NA engine don't make power until at least 4k-5k rpm.

Even the current V10 M5 suffers the same fate with the 5L engine, drive a M5 and a CLS55 back to back and you will see how the M5 is lack the instant low end power of the CLS.

That's one of the reason BMW is going the Turbo route, boasting low end power while retaining absolute power output, I would expect the new M5 engine to be a gem in delivering explosive power up and down the rev range like the engine in the X5/6M.
