I doubt it was that entertaining for the driver...

at least he had the chance to drive a ferrari F50 and he'll never forget it... poor guy...

... for a very short distance

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

    Incompetent and stupid driver.
He should have lifted his foot from the brake when he tried to avoid the woman...the car would have gone to the right without any problem. Oh boy...Ferrari should sell a driver's license with their cars...

All car manufacturers should do so, at least those of the fast cars.
I think that's a real problem: the faster and more expensive a car is, the higher is chance that it is driven by an incompetent driver (if cars like the F50, Enzo etc. are driven at all...).

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

    Maybe it was his car.
It hurts to see this video. autch!
But this is a perfekt example, that those cars need adequate drivers.
although this small problem which he faced should be easy to handle.
Ferrari (ENZO) and Porsche (CGT) should really sell the cars only to drivers which are able to handle hand take care of it. Because those cars are not only very dangerous, they are art. I also would'nt buy a small child a picasso.

Fortunatly there are enough people who buy those cars and put them in their collection. Which is also kinda sad, and dishonorable, but at least it guaranties that such cars wan't die off.

"He should have lifted his foot from the brake when he tried to avoid the woman...the car would have gone to the right without any problem."

Having hit a few walls, I'm always very reluctant to judge others' incidents. But I have to agree - looks like the driver stayed with full lock-up and full right steering to the bitter end. Wonder if he got a big jump off the prior corner, or if the surface was just quite wet and slick? No air bags deployed? Also, did he hit two people? Quite a bad incident for what seemed to have been intended to be a low speed fun event (no helmets, track workers right next to the cars, no run-off room, etc).

    What a shame.

Rather tight spot for an autocross.

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

    The F50 has no airbag.

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

Fanch, did you receive my PM? I apologize again for taking so long to reply to yours. Cheers, Will

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

Yes I did, thank you very much!

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

Both the driver and the woman (move!) are idiots.

I saw this on tv before, about 1-2 years ago, but I don't remember any details...

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

My opinion is that the ABS locked the wheels and he couldn't steer, and he was in shock and couldn't take his hands off.

If the F50 had ABS , which it doesn't, then he probably would NOT have locked the brakes and probably COULD have steered the car . Is that what you mean, because your post has several inaccuracies/inconsistancies.

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

Furthermore, let's say that car had gone into terminal understeer mode. Cranking the wheel further and further does not fix this problem.

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

The video is shot down by the harbour area in Monaco.

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

    Mistake on my part.

I meant to say the F50 does NOT have ABS. Therefore, when he braked, the wheels locked up and eveyrone knows you can't steer then. It all happened so fast that there was probably nothing he could do.

This is why I said the driver should have lifted his foot from the brake...
A real idiot because you can't drive such a car without basic driving skills. He could have killed that woman (and NO, it wasn't HER fault).

I shall never forget how my dealer delivered the Porsche and let me drive off in it without ever having seen my license. Only when I came to drive their Peugeot loaner at the first service did they insist on seeing a drivers license. Crazy!

I think it is pretty obvious that the performance car manufacturers have no faith in their customers. Instead the philosophy is to make the cars uncrashable by dialling in understeer and adding ever increasing doses of electronics. The GT3 is the obvious exception but is also clearly designed not to appeal to the non-enthusiast driver.

I personally think that the ever improving electronics are a good thing but I also think it is a big mistake to use them as a substitute for driver skills. In the end, a stupid driver is still going to kill himself. There is no substitute for judgment. You've got to see it coming. No amount of electronics will get you out of a situation that you should never have got into in the first place.

"Instead the philosophy is to make the cars uncrashable by dialling in understeer and adding ever increasing doses of electronics."

And adding width and length and weight. Very, very well said! That's also why I'd lean towards the GT2 or GT3, and the Stradale, for a "fun" car. Soon I fear there will be nothing even somewhat "raw" left to buy, all sportscars will have electronic aids that cannot be turned off, and I'll be a cranky old man driving vintage cars.

I admire & enjoy the electronics in a sedan or GT, but wish for a truly stripped down, bare bones, lightweight, streetable Porsche or Ferrari sportscar: in such a car, for which I would pay a premium, I could do without radio/speakers/gps/etc; electric & heated seats; electric windows; any form of traction control; anything other than minimal storage space; sound deadening material; air bags; parking sensor systems; multiple driver settings of seats and mirrors; carpeting; more than two seats; possibly even a/c; sunroof; scoops, intakes and the like that have no function; heavy stock wheels; and probably more. I bet there'd be a short queue for such a car, but I'd try to be at the front ...

I do not think it is an accident that you cannot get these things on a GT3. Porsche has realised that if they leave out all of the creature comforts and make the car almost undrivable by the masses then the posers will stay away. We've seen this first-hand with a number of people commenting that they bought the GT3 new and are already selling it because they cannot live with it. At least, I hope that Porsche has realised it and that this isn't just an accident. The recipe seems to work so hopefully they will keep following it and we will get more cars like the GT3.

Let's not forget what happened in North America with some of the earlier versions of the Turbo. I think we need to be very careful to make sure that the general populous realises that these specialised cars are not for them. I think the manufacturers could do more in this regard. For example, look at the warnings being given by BMW on the M3 CSL tyres. I think more explicit warnings need to be given. At the moment the retail philosophy is to push the cars on anyone that will take them. Hopefully this changes. We really do need to have some sort of Super License.

Same thing with the GT2: I personally know 2 GT2 owners who switched to a 996 Turbo after a few months.
Of course posers can drive the GT3 and GT2 too but usually you see them over here in Germany driving on the Autobahn at 160 kph or more obvious: they drive fast as long as the street follows a straight line but when the first curve is coming, the slow down substantially.

Oh, well ... I guess no system is perfect. There are a few dedicated posers who seem to be able to put up with anything.

    Re: Super license

They should do the same as what the motor cycles companies do : offer with extreme bikes, some training with real pilots ... they offer this for example with the Honda and his brand new CBR1000, or Yamaha with the new R6, and R1 (180 hp for 170 kg's) ...
nevertheless, even if you get this training, you have to do it regulary, several times per year, with different weather conditions to keep these reflexes ...
I'm doin' mc races (supersport), and I can confess how difficult it is to come back to the roots after 3 months wintertime.

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

Two weeks ago, I attended the Cavallino Classic in Palm Beach, Florida. I drove my 360 (with street tires) against Challange cars, an Enzo, an F40 and others. The Enzo and F40 both went off the track. Nonetheless, I applaud anyone who "drives" a Ferrari--that's what they're made for.

    Re: Idiot crashes F50....video.

IMO, the way the hoses begin to rot when the car isn't driven is a sign from the car gods "Drive your cars"
